We started talking about this trip about 6 months ago. For one reason or another, ie: work, holidays etc it felt like it would never happen. After Kitno and myself doing a quick trip down there two weeks ago, I came home with a desire to head back down. There is something about watching the boat next to you throwing 5kg+ snapper over the side that gets you going. Bent rods, reels screaming, yahooing. Yep, it gets you going. Funniest thing I heard all day, bloody tidlers as another 5kg+ snapper heads over the side.Shocked Kitno and I sat there looking at each other wondering if we had entered the twilight zone. Biggest fish that day 6.88kg.

A week later and the weather god looked upon us favourably. A small window of opurtunity that I wasn't going to miss.  I gave Geoff a call and it was all on. I awoke on the morning to the sound of rain on the roof. When I say rain....it was pissing down. Oh well, mokau is two and a half hours away, she'll be right. As I headed off at 4am all I could do was wonder if today was the day of getting the fish of a life time. As I neared Te Kuiti the weather turned to custard. The rain was so hard I was struggeling at 50 km/h. I just about turned around but for that voice in my head, is today is the day. After all, people catch some amazing fish in bad weather. We have all read about it. I continued through and the weather settled. Arriving at Geoffs to hot coffee. We beach launched the stabi, and headed out to spot x. I think much to geoffs disgust when I took him straight to the spot from the week before. Chart plotter...You bloody beauty haha. The unforcast wind made the fishing challenging. After a couple of hours, we had caught some nice fish, nothing huge but very nice.  The fishing is bloody slow today Geoff said as number four hit the bin. We were also releasing some very respectable tidlers as Geoff calls them. **** man, those things are stonkers where I fishClap haha.  We took a total of 8 between us and released a lot more. It is truly an amazing feeling watching those good fish swim away.
I had an amazing day with a absolute legend of a bloke. It is so cool to see this guys enthusiasim towards fishing, There is not much this guy has not done if you wanna talk snapper. Well there is one, as he will tell you, but I am sure he will nail the world record.

So while I didn't get me that fish of a life time, I learnt a lot to put me on the right track. Geoff, thanks. You're a bloody legend!!!

GREAT fishing, GREAT company  and GREAT coffee.  What more could you ask for.

OH.... And a bloody exciting ride back onto the beach.LOL But that's another story!

Well said Ivan. Yes, Geoff definitely made us look like a couple of amateur's that day. I think we both learnt a few lessons during that session.

Thanks Ivan-[Sole M8] for the kind words. Its always interesting meeting other Fisho's from the Forum. In the case of yourself and Craig-[kitno] we all get on like wev'e been mates for years, making the fishing and socialising great. Ivan remember the other day when we came in close to shelter from wind and sloppy sea for a while that kontiki by us got a Snapper over 12 kg's on it when pulled in. My neighbour watched it come in. I knew the big buggers are still around! Summer fishing here in Mokau always harder to get on to the 20 lb plus fish but it will happen, Trust me!Big smile Couple more visits, who knows. Be great to see you guys do it. Look forward to next visit!!! CheersBeer

Amazing isn't it.  We have been told for years....Fish your feet first, yet most still head for the horizon, as we witnessed on both trips. I used three litres of fuelClap.

Also can't wait for the next trip.

Beer Might have to sink a few of these.....instead of my boat haha

Yes I had a great time fishing with Geoff - does your head in seeing those big Snaps coming into the boat...must be something in the habitat/food supply they get big in Mokau!

(I think I have finally figured out Geoffs plan Wink - he will let us forum guys take away some 20 pounders so the remaining ones getting bigger as more food so he can get his world record Snap one day!  Long term thinking that very smart.....)
Good fishing trip nothing breaks, great trip catch fish.

Hi John, good to hear from Ya! The  boys  miss  quoted me a bitLOL Would love to get one in or around the NZ record weight. They are definately there! Had a monster on 5-6 years ago, five minutes into playing line went slack. Up came the shank only of a 12/0 hook! The bugger crunched it in half. Gone to the big circles since. Iv'e always said the 30 lb da's are the hard ones to catch! Might never get another! Thats wots great about fish'n! if you prepare well, have big fresh baits down as i like to use, one could come along on any trip out! Cheers.....
