Was wondering if anyone has brought a speargun from South Africa and had it sent to Australia or New Zealand. What are the pros and cons? Just a newbie and was told they are a lot cheaper ect. Any advise would be great cheers.

i've been there when on a work trip and bought a fair bit of gear at the 'dive factory' as they call it. waaaaay cheaper and they can custom make your gun on the spot. unfortunately i don't think you will have any luck getting them to post it out of RSA as they have importers in NZ and aus and it would undermine their existing business

They will hit you big time with inspection fee, gst, and imprt duty, as my wife found out recently, when buying clothes.  SHe ended up almost spending double!  Not worth your while unless you bring it in yourself, as I did 18 years ago, coming back from a visit...
Never underestimate and old man with a spear gun ;)

Let's all support the retailers in NZ who support and grow our sport.
Do or do not. There is no try.

I'm fairly sure if you buy one for personal use and the price of your gear doesn't exceed $700 and/or you remove stickers, tags, wrapping, etc. you won't have a problem bringing a souvenir or a "used" gun. But if you're showing up at the border with a brand spanking new quiver, expect to pay.
AFAIK you are allowed to bring goods up to $700 into the country without having to pay gst. If this is a bottle of rum, a camera, your wife's tiara or a speargun doesn't matter. If buying goods overseas online, the price must not exceed $400. That's why the tax declarations are stuck to the outside of the box.
But please don't take my word for it - do your research on the customs website. Things may have changed…

Pretty sure you couldn't get it any cheaper... splash dive in Auckland offer a world wide price guarantee - that is; if you can get any of their products cheaper, anywhere in the world, they will beat it by 10%. They are also the Rob Allen distributor in NZ, and I'd say they would have done the sums, and know that you couldn't beat their prices. That being said, I know first hand that you can haggle with them. My 120 cm carbon RA gun arrived by courier yesterday, and I didn't pay the $650 listed on their site! Haven't used it yet (that's the plan for tomorrow), but looks a very impressive weapon.

They are definitely cheaper in South Africa but they won't send here. For example, the 120 Caranx is 1,615 Rand (about $180 NZD), compared to $400 NZD here in NZ. My brother is heading over for a cricket trip soon and I'm getting him to bring me a couple back. At least they are cheaper here than the ridiculous prices that are charged for RA gear in Aussie...
Splash do have a "World's best price guarantee" but don't honour it with regard to the prices from the Dive Factory in South Africa. Trust me, I've tried. They simply say that because the Dive Factory doesn't ship to us their Price Guarantee is "void". I argued with them that it's a bit misleading but got nowhere. To be fair they did honour the guarantee on a product I could get shipped here for cheaper.

Any carbon roller gun is gonna get taxed pretty heavy.

I dont know if we get hit so bad with spear gear. Clearly we do with electronics.

Keep in mind the shops have to pay the costs of import, shop overheads, tax and making some profit.

In saying that if you are going overseas and can pick one up you are cutting out all of the above.

Its the cost of living on a small Island (oh I forgot we have 2 islands lol) in the middle of nowhere. No economies of scale.

Beware where you fly through. My mate got hold up in Hong Kong with my gun while the whole plane had to wait for him. It looked like a surface to air gun on the Xray and they didn't like that.

Also think you are not allowed to pass through Singapore with a speargun.
