Went wide Yesterday. Water temp maxed out at 20 Degrees past 400m (sounder lost bottom) Saw some minor splashes from (suspect) skippies, but no other surface activity. We weren't chasing Marlin or Yellowfin but plenty of others were. Managed to stay hooked up for 8 hours to what we believe was a Broadbill before the Puka rig busted just below the crimp. Home very late, disappointed but not devastated. Is there any other fish out there that can sustain drags in excess of 15kg for hours?

Krow, big threshers can do that, especially if hooked in the tail as they often are. I remember in one of Matt Watson's old episodes him talking about the average fight times of various gamefish species they had encountered on Primetime and threshers were not too far behind broadies in average fight times.

Let's go with a broadbill, a 8 hour fight is worthy of a sword in the story.
Hard luck :(

Thanks for the info guys. Never thought of a Threasher. How do they fight?  Some more info: Dropped the rig to the bottom. Hooked up within seconds all hooks had Skippy baits) and fish came up to near the surface but a tad behind the boat. Thought it was a puka floating out but instead of coming in just kept going out and away. Long runs down to various depths and then back up to the surface but as soon as we got ontop of it down it would go again. I don't think it was hooked in the tail as the head shakes were mean.

Krow, my thoughts with a fight like that it was a broadie, Threshers tend to fight all the way up from the bottom from what I gather, only got reasonable ones at night. Long fast runs, they make you work for them.

And there was no backharness or clips to the reel so it was just Dougie arm power. Bloody great effort mate. Slow day today though...

Bugger Krow! Nice effort though, 8 hours is a long time to test them arms out.

Good stuff krow. Reckon its a sword with the big head shakes. Last big thresher we caught gave up after 3.5hrs and lets say it was rather sizey!eg didnt want it anywhere near boat.

FB comments from Tony Orton;

Classic morning! two marlin swam past our boat in 40-50m off Bream bay!!!!!!!!!!!!
We had to cancel our offshore charter today so I shot out with Grant Dixon from NZ Fishing News magazine for a softbait mission in Bream Bay area. In the distance we saw a fin and brushed it off for a dolphin. Grant in joking said it looked like a marlin, a few minutes latter two marlin swam past the boat all lit up. We cast a softbait at them and that was it.
I never go fishing with out live biat or my camera but today was the day I only took my light gear to chase snapper with a mate. Mean morning with snappers upto 6.5kg, heaps of ratl kings and two marlin by the boat. Fck NZ always surprizes me!
Cheers for a stuinning morning Mr D.
