Hi guys

Sorry to hijack this thread .
Wondering what the road access is like to whangaroa ramp / harbour.
Heard some trees over hang the road a bit?
Got a 9 Mtr trailer boat that's about 3.9 Mtrs high on trailer just wondering if il fit down the road.
Hopefully will head up late February for a holiday and some fishing , coming from New Plymouth.
Wondering best place to launch.

Cheers
Mark.

Hey Mark,
I cannot say whether your boat will 'fit'under the trees or not, but I sspect it will. the trees have been trimmed to allow trailer boat access.  I tow a 7.5m Westcoaster down that road to Whangaroa ramp with out any problems.
Over xmas I saw an 8m Whitepointer get down that  road  ...
If you cannot get any definitive feed back from this forum , you might like to give Laurie -weighmaster -  a call - he runs/owns the pub there 09 405 0347. He is a good bugger and I am sure will put uyou onto the right contacts

cheers

The overhanging trees at the Whangaroa boat ramp have claimed numerous softbait rods over the years...

Quite a few fish caught over the past couple of days but they are still fairly spread out. Good water and feed has moved well in over that past week and pushed both blues and stripeys in close. There are a lot of very small marlin at the moment but the odd big one amongst them.
4 seiners 2 planes and a helicopter working close in to Whangaroa at the moment scooping hundreds of tons of skippies (and anything else that gets in the way). We've all got to make a dollar but its pretty sad to see the way that Sanfords work over an area an area like that and one can only wonder at the true catch profit vs the recreational and charter fishing value if they left it alone for a while.
I just we don't end up with a desert like some other areas that have been commercially fished to death.

Sucks alright, same thing all down both coasts. They don't give a f $$k about anyone else. Just want their quick dollars, they get richer at our expense. Definitely doesn't make economic sense

There have been several fish from the Garden Patch over the weekend but there is good water all the way down to the Cavs. The marlin are spread out right through it so just find the food and stay working the area.

I agree Sam its a total joke. I almost got my gear cleared out from behind El Donna over the weekend and then almost lost a fish because the . . . .ker wanted to run straight behind us with a fish on even though he would have quite plainly been able to see me backing down hard !

Plenty of action though out there. I noted a big push of water from out wide 500-600m  right into Stevies and the Cavaliis in close which is where a number of guys picked up fish in that 150/180 area.. It seems to be pushing back out towards the Ninepin where we picked up our 3rd fish for the weekend.

ElDonna will be back out there tomorrow with a charter and Im picking will be back in the same area.

Seiners still going hard yesterday and bait was noticeably more broken and wide spread.
There are plenty of marlin around the bait but patience is the key while the bait is deep.
Black and Purple did the damage for us yesterday.

Just got back from 2 days up there. That ******* Souza dropped his dory 100 metres in front of us, then proceeded to try and circle around the outside of us. AFTER two other seiners had been in the same area and heading toward the patch of fish we were working, they headed off somewhere else possibly after seeing 3 other boats working the bait with us. But this predatory bugger just came flying in, dropped his dory and scooped them all up. Sadly no beakies for us, but thoroughly enjoyed our first foray into the area.

So Phil is live baiting the name of the game when bait is deep or are you persevering with lures?
