I was considering subscribing to one of the SST data suppliers for the upcoming season.  I was looking at OceanSST and Fishtrack, both would be viewed on an android phone or tablet.  Fishtrack have their own dedicated app, and OceanSST uses a generic mapping app to view the data.  Now I'm fairly sure that neither of these outfits have their own satellites orbiting the earth, so I guess they are both buying the data in from someone -probably the same original data?

My question is whether there is any significant difference in the data they provide.  There is a big difference in price, with OceanSST being $260 for the season while Fishtrack is $80 per year.  Anyone have experience of both who can offer a comparison?

There is no comparison, i have used both

Fishtrack is rubbish

Ocean SST - is worth every cent you pay.

That's just the kind of feedback I was looking for, what makes Ocean SST so good, or Fishtrack so bad?

Ocean SST is focused on area's you fish, more detailed and up to date readings. good over lays and temp chart, currents etc.

it is far superior advanced than fishtrack in my opinion and you wont be disappointed using oceansst.

I suppose that's the benefit of a local company who specialise in NZ against a global company who offer data for most of the world.

Now that's a good question. Having dabbled with both I would be very interested to hear how others think these tools have impacted/benefited their results. After all gas ain't cheap and the days are long.
Just 1 more....

I reckon oceansst put me onto 6 marlin last season and I mean just about right on them and a few more that were around features that he had highlighted, temp breaks ,upwellings etc.
I'm a frequent flyer and am now used  to steaming to Paul's marks and there being something happening when we get there, fish, bait or at least a temp break to work.
If not,so long as there is coverage Paul is usually available to help work out where you should be.
He'll be getting my sub again this season too

Cheers for that.
I'm just doing a  you tube vid on how to get the most out of the maps etc, planning ahead of time. and saving important data for mobile use from home.

I will post something up when I can

Cheers

Kevin.
A lot of my work is manual, and I do wade through more data than I load.

Cloud is an issue, so I may use three or four different satt passes over the same period to get as much cloud free data to different areas within NZ.

I know what I want to see as a fisherman, and I try to create good quality images.

All data I produce is offline ready and tiled for better quality when zooming into your boat position. This causes file size issues That is why I have zones rather than an entire image of NZ.

I like Drop Box ,because it will keep trying in the background to load a map, if you drop in and out of cell reception.

The near real time data is very high resolution for the simple fact if you are looking for those areas of temp fluctuations this becomes important.

Cheers
Paul

Hey Paul does the service include images for chlorophyll levels and sea surface heights also by any chance or is it mainly looking at sea surface temps and currents?

I've subscribed for a few seasons but I don't think I've had the full benefits - being out of cell phone coverage doesn't help.
Also had a sceptical skipper who thought he had a better plan but when we moved to where the map said we should be a day later, we got onto fish....of course, that was the skippers good call.
Will give it a go again for the coming season but always seem to find my android tablet and downloading maps a bit hit and miss.
Be yourself; everyone else is already taken

Fb8 android needs a re start to load maps with a 5 second delay for the app to close completely in the background. Once you open the app the maps will load. It shows as a problem with file error. Its the file format used. There are intructional videos for both apps this season. Apple app doesn't need to re start. Gowest ssh and chlorophyll are included
