Q4.

We have quite a range of tuna that visit our shores.

How many can you name.

And what two are the least common.

And one of these two, one has something that makes it more unsual than others. What is this unusual feature.

There are nine species that I know of that have been caught by game fisherman in NZ waters.  Now this should be interesting to see if people can name them all.

Craig a lot of people have probably caught the 9th one but not realized they have actually caught a different species.

Also to be technically correct one of the Tuna's occasionally caught in NZ waters is actually a member of the Mackerel family (as in Spanish mackerel type of mackerel not jack mackerel)

Sorry I had to cheat, apparently we also get Frigate Tuna (Mackerel) and Australian Bonito. In all my days fishing commercial & recreational I have never even seen one, so I guess the answer is 10.
Maybe Im not that knowledgeable after all Embarrassed.

Good numbers there Merci.
Don't forget the other part of the question.

But ten is looking likely as there are maybe three more to add to that list.

Tzer, I'm not sure on those, but I'm happy to respect your description.
If I was to be pendantic, ones a bloody Australian, and the others a mackerel.
And I should of mentioned " that have been caught by rod and line"!

Craig, yes you are right the other is the Frigate mackerel or often called frigate tuna and it is a true Tuna, whereas the Butterfly tuna is actually a mackerel. I did not include the Australian Bonito even though it has been caught here occasionally as it is not a tuna or ever referred to as a tuna.

We get the odd frigate mackerel up in the BOP when we have schools of small skippies about and usually fairly late in the season, I personally have caught 4 or 5, they are only about 1 kg or so. Most people would just think they have caught a funny looking little skippy.

Marligator,
For the purposes of wide education, would you be so kind as posting pics if you can find them of these species.
Referring to the frigate mackerel.
It makes me think we should provide here pics and id of some of these.
Anyone prepared to chime in.

As to the butterfly mackerel, I for one had counted it as a tuna species in this question.
And it also relates to the other part of the question which as of now and maybe because of my mis identification has not been answered.
Still as a fish species it has unusual features as a fish.
So the question although enhanced is the same.
This fish has some unusual physical characteristics, what are they.

There's one unusual species of tuna,  from doubtless bay that's still running from your green stick last seen going east at a great rate of knots last season.
Those that say it can't be done are being overtaken by those doing it.

Are you there Shaneg, ready to post up your question.

So to add to the tuna list and happy to be corrected.

Koheru
Slender tuna.

The unusual feature of the butterfly tuna is as follows.

It has a head that is protruding as similar but not as pronounced as a mahi but solid as a brick ****house.
It has very large scales like that of a granddaddy snapper, most unusual.
It has a robust skeletal structure.
This is quite possibly an ancient species of fish.
Butterfly tuna, notice the above id marks.

Tuna in general.

And it's seems one of our own, a slender tuna.
