When Zane Grey came to this country to fish our mighty yellowtail he also chased the many Pelagics more readily available than was anticipated.

He brought some new gear and techniques the like not seen in this part of the world before.

What did he bring to tow behind the boat, and what was the unusual aspect of it?

He brought with him teasers for raising fish. This was a first in this country.
But no ordinary teasers, he liked big uns, and running as a pair.
The were made from cedar and painted. One red and one white.
They were approx a metre long and a foot wide.

Yes Marligator your right.
It weighed in at 536.15 kg, caught in Chile by Louis Marrion.

And they get bigger.

One interesting story from here in NZ relates to a broadbill hook up that was lost after 32 hours, 95 km and was estimated at 7.3m long.
This fish was hooked off Major Island by Don Heatley on the Abalone in 21.01.1968. It took them on a zig zag course up past the Aldermans.
The skipper said the fish had a metre high dorsal fin.

It is also believed that this fish was hooked a second time a few weeks later by the same skipper and boat and fought for 8.5 hours before dying and being unable to raise the fish the story ends there.

There are many tough fighting fish and some of them are sharks.
Threshers are regarded as one of the toughest fish to fight.
They hold deep and use there massive rudder and pectorals to plane away. They often do vertical fights which is extremely tough on the angler.
They enjoy jumping are pretty to look at with a small head and large eyes. There are two species.

The question is; What is the all tackle record, where and when?

The All Tackle record for a thresher was caught here in NZ.
The angler was Mrs Dianne North. Caught at Tutukaka on 08.02.81 and it weighed in at 363 kg.
