Somewhat off topic (although I own a lovely handmade filleting knife made from an old sawmill blade, by Shark Knikes, Kaitaia) I have moved on from rod building to knives. Nothing fancy so far, first was to add a bamboo detail to a Deejo folder. Next was a ready made blank by Condor, with free oak offcuts for the scales (thank you Natural Timber Creations of Kerikeri.)
Project 3 is a Damascus steel dagger with bronze guard and bolster and Black maire scales........so far it's a blade, block of wood and brass rod..........work to be done.

Anyway, what I am after is some thick leather hide, 3-4mm, to make a sheath. I can only find thin leather on trademe, or full hides at $200+.
Does anyone have suggestions where I could source around 1m sq. of thick hide?

I made a number of sheaths back in the day with leather recycled from old rugby balls, not much use now with everything being synthetic but you never know whats kicking around in the back of the garage...

I use old saddle flaps, the worn leather gives a good effect.

Svord peasant blade reworked in Black Maire hardwood handle

Svord mini in Black Walnut

Svord mini polished blade

Looking ahead the pivots will be better/ more centred as I bought a counterbore drill. No more off centre drilling!

Currently putting a Pohutakawa handle onto a Svord filleting knife. Blade shortened and reprofiled by a few cm, hidden tang construction. Wood slabs held on by home made 'Loveless bolts'
Similar to these but I turn my own by putting the bolt in a drill and filing the nuts until round.

Looks like this once fitted.

Great work. Looks just as good if not better than any bespoke knives I have seen for sale.

Cheers. Totally non commercial, the hunting knives are for the 19 & 22 yo sons of a friend, both into their hunting big time.
Another of the Svord peasant folders in black walnut went to a local cabinet maker who supplied me with some interesting off cuts.
I now have a nice short bendy filleting knife blank from Australia, ready for wood scales etc.
I love the contours and polish you get on the brass finger guard.
The Condor Bushlore blanks are available from blademaster.co.nz, a knife shop of such scale and variety i can't visit the website without putprchasimg something. The Condor blank is around $40, but it needed the brass pin holes drilled in a new position. I bough a length of brass bar to make finger guards etc, 3M length! If anyone needs a section, free if you pay postage. Cut a slot, solder onto the blade and add wooden scales. Grinding belt to shape, then several coats of clear coat, and its done. However I do spend a fair bit of time removing the grind marks on the blade edge and polishing it. Sufficient to make it completely non viable as a commercial proposition

Mustard patina is done by dabbing American Mustard onto the blade (high Carbon steel) then washing off after 3-4 hours then repeat several times to build up the finish as below.

Damascus steel is totally different- multiple layers of steel made through forging and folding. Then the finished blade is etched with Ferric Chloride or similar, to accentuate the layers.

Latest 2, Condor Kephart with brass detail, and a Sgean Duhb- the traditional short knife tucked in your sock when wearing a kilt. Only this one is Purpleheart wood.
