Can anyone tell me if the KY have into the river mouth areas yet? Tried tangimoana about a month ago with out a single nibble. In 5 years of fishing there, this season has been the worst. .. pilly baits on a "custom" trace set up have always produced the goods in the past. . . So reasonably confident it's environmental not personal choices that are affecting the catch rates. Cheers

Weekends at Tangi have been pretty much bare since xmas (although the dear hearted souls setting nets across the entire river mouth seem to have been catching a few Kahawai in the mornings).

Up to xmas was pretty good fishing, since then has been a couple of littlies off the beach, nothing in the river mouth (not even the herrings on sabiki).

What spinner are you using?

Tried the old faithful hex, and a orange / green and a red / silver, nothing seemed to be attracting interest.

Fish seem to be coming back to Tangi (off the beach) the river is so low at the moment even the bait fish are struggling to get in, boats are having a very hard time.

Last weekend a coupe of tiddlers, weekend before had a good session just after dark off the point (8 Kahawai in about 2 hours).

Forget Tangi now, there is no river mouth (it has moved up to Santoft). Now a lagoon by the carpark - unsure if anything in it besides snags galore. Boat ramp has gone, beach has turned into even more of a driftwood forest.

Going to try off the beach this weekend (if the tides play ball and we can get round to the front).

Game seems to be back on. Have been trying to sort out a couple of cheap kontiki options (which haven't returned any goods as yet) over the past few weeks.

Saturday braved the sunshine and heat to have a quick morning fish at the new rivermouth, followed by a more leisurely afternoon fish just on high tide just south of the old river exit.

Fired a blank in the morning, but the afternoon yielded a good 45cm+ Kahawai in good condition (fed 6 people for brekkie on sunday) plus a wee shark. Bloke about 100m north landed two Kahawai in about 1 1/2 hours fishing.

Sunday then blew like crazy, so didn't go out again. Will be interesting to see how the beach looks again this weekend.

Top weekend. Saturday fished the early morning on the beach, nothing much happening. Sunday late morning / early afternoon again on the beach at high tiide fishing into the channel. A few significant bites, plenty of feeding the fish with the bait.

Sunday evening moved up to the new river mouth, there is a bit of a lagoon forming there. Fished into that coming up to low tide at change of light, hooked six kahawai, landed five in the space of about 1 1/2 hours.

Talking to the locals, they think that the kahawai take is going to be a bit light, as there is some commercial fella setting nets across the river mouth and hauling out Kahawai by the multiple bin loads.

A rubbish weekend weather-wise, but Kahawai still on the take at the new river-mouth lagoon. Was going to try the channel along the front of the beach at the old river mouth, but weather turned to real rubbish in the Sunday. But still, three good fish Friday night and another on Saturday morning (along with watching a family haul in a few fish just along from where I was).

Squid and anchovies on flasher rigs seem to be the order of the day for picking up the bites.

There seems to be a bit of a monster fish hanging out in the lagoon as well. He has bust me off twice and the fishing buddies a time apiece. He looks to be about double the size of the Kahawai we are landing (all good 2Kg plus), and uses the same technique each time; moderate struggle until the "shelf" of the beach, then kicks off the edge with his body and buggers off. Silly enough to get caught, cunning enough to get away each time. But he will be mine, oh yes, he will be landed yet. :)

theres a lot of wood out there at the moment, over the next 1-2 weeks there will be alot of under water structure so be aware when surfcasting, also there will be alot of fresh so if you want puss cod( red cod) nows the best time to chase them

River mouth lagoon gone, just a straight river run now. Also no fish either in river, front channel or three mile. And the bait were extremely scarce as well, suspect the snow melt and southerly have driven them off a bit. Even the long-liners were struggling.
