Have used the 4500 live liner, good little reel I would say the 8500 size would be great for surfcasting/rock fishing.
A king on the bricks is worth 5 in a boat.

Had a look at the Shimano big baitrunner XTA?
They aren't heavy tanks like the previous model.

I have two and absolutely love them, they cast well, have excellent retrieve and very strong.

i've had a 6500 live liner for 2 1/2 years, no issues with it and a caught a fair few fish on it and occasionally use it for land based popper chucking, it dealt to kings upto 12kg without raising a sweat.

Thanks all after bit of read up and research I decided to get the new shimano big baitrunner long cast. I wanted something I could use both on the beach and off the rock stray lining.

I agree the Thunnus is the best of the bait runners up to 12000 size. If you want the next size up in CI4+ you won't find it locally. Shimano do a Big Baitrunner Long cast in CI4+ Called the B-Baitrunner XTR-A LC. This reel is like the big brother of the Thunnus and supper light and takes 300m of 15kg mono and castes exceptionally well. This reel is the best bait runner I have used, although I like all the bait runners.

I have an okuma avenger bait runner. Cheaper than the big brand gear and hasn't let me down yet. Spooled with 10kg mono. Have landed up to 14lb snapper off the rocks without any dramas. Would recommend.

Penn spin fisher live liner or Shimano Thunnus. The Thunnus is more expensive the Penn is more robust. IMO
Tight lines

I have a Thunnus 8000 and it is excellent. Have 300m of 10kg fireline exceed (breaks at 14kg) and about  50m of 8kg mono topshot.

I would recommend that, but if fishing on the rocks, would be tempted to get something a little cheaper for the inevitable rock rash.

Good choice on the BTR longcast.

I have a couple of Thunnus 8000's and they are great strayline reels but I doubt they have the spool capacity to ever be a great surf casting reel.
