The team from Captain Morgan joined me yesterday on a very special day out with Tony Orton and Offshore Adventures. Captain Morgan has been the very proud and loyal sponsor of the Briny Bar for quite a few years now and so it was awesome to be able to host the team and say thanks for being such great supporters of the site.

Bait had been hard to catch and yesterday was no exception so we had to compromise a bit and left with a few macs in the tank but arguably less that we would’ve liked. Tony runs an 850 Extreme with twin Honda 200’s and our trip to the Mokes was smooth and a great chance to catch up. What a machine. Quiet, stable and quick and even on a near perfect day you could tell it was the perfect boat for these medium range trips.

Tony is an immensely experienced  Captain, in fact a very successful gamefisherman/sportsfisherman in his own right and it shows in everything he does. He’s an excellent host, has some great stories to tell and can help and instruct anglers with any level of experience to achieve their best in a day on the water. More about that in a minute.

From the moment you step on the boat you can see this is not a rough and ready operation. Everything is immaculate and in it’s place and the full set of Shimano gear is bright, shiny, rigged and ready to rumble with the big guys.

'Captain Morgan' was our star performer and while the lads all certainly put in a solid effort for the day and contributed to the salt-iced catch bin, Hannah stole the day with:

Her first kingfish
A PB snapper of  just over 8kg
Her first John Dory

Pete had the hard luck story of the day when he lost what was certainly the fish of the day after a torrid to-fro battle. It was an industrial-sized string puller and with some good kings up around the 30kg mark coming from the area, it had all the markings of a fish in that league. A tough one Pete and better luck next time!

Thanks Tony for a spectacular day on the water and your excellent hospitality. More solid chunks of goodness for the memory banks and a great reminder of what an awesome place we live in.

And a very big thank-you to the Captain Morgan team. Staunch supporters of this forum and a top bunch of people to spend the day with. Cheers Clap

The pics tell the story...

Grunta thanks for a great day and a mean as crew to spend the day with. Those bait schools on the surface are something else. I think I want to record the noise it makes and have it playing around the house!
Cheers
Tony

Was this on thursday? Me and afew buddies were around the maori rocks and we saw your charter boat turn up. We found it quite hard with alot of rats around, we nabbed 9 good sized snapper on slow jigs, One of them @ 22lbs. Ended up catching 2 kings on live bait to 16kg. Was such a mint day with no other boats around.

Sure was mate. Spotted one other boat anchored up when we came into Maori Rock so must've been you guys. Agree -> the fishing was hard and a few other reports from around the Gulf confirmed that but the team went home with a decent dinner and the experience of an awesome day. We had some frenetic trev/seabird activity, dolphins, whales and even a sunfish at Maori rock plus schools of kahawai in that area that were phenomenal.

We are blessed living here and to Tony's credit, he turned a tough fishing day into a special one for all of us. When you're at the top of your game like Tony is, that's what makes the difference between a good day out and a really special day out. I take my hat off to our charter industry, they work hard and do us proud......
