Thanks Skidoggg for those additional photos, these photos look more like a blue, are there any others which show that frill area better, also was there scales on the deck when you lifted the fish out of the boat which would indicate blue marlin as the scales on blues are on the skin surface and can be flicked off with your finger nail or come off when catch on anything whereas on a striped marlin they are between the skin and the flesh i.e they do not come off when the fish is dragged etc.

As I eluded to before I think in that first photo on the previous page the angle of the fish to the photographer (not square on) and the sun direction maybe making it look like a stripey.

also when a BLUE smacks a lure it always jumps NORTH !

we were heading north and our 2nd  BLUE almost jumped in the boat when hit lure .

thats how you tell LOL stripey jumps in any direction.

Then I would say it was a blue and we have been tricked by the angle of the fish to the camera and the sun direction in that first photo.

This has been a great exercise in fish identification and by asking the right questions we quickly got it sorted and the correct identification was made in the first place which is great. But it just shows that photos can be misleading at times, one of the main things is that if there is ever the slightest doubt to identification take a photo of that throat area and note about the scales being on the skin surface or under the skin against the flesh.
Great catch guys and it sounds like you had a really good comp.

Just enjoyed a couple days east of the barrier, still sum nice water out there, didn't see a marlin, plenty of Mahi Mahi on a huge log that would sink most boats!
Highlight was catching my first ever swordfish which pulled the scales back at great barrier island down to 245kg. These fish are so tough, this one had me occupied at the crease for just over 10 hours!
