Nailed this stunning Jack under an hour ago, a personal best at 12.5lb, not far off 6kg!!!  Middle of the day, sight fished to on one of the busiest rivers in the North Island... The Tongariro....

Stoked and released to give someone else the pleasure of catching such a magnificent fish! So hard getting quality footage on your own though - this from video screen grab. Andrew

Say that again John, given up fishing for the day now!... Had me well into my backing up and down the pool, a happy man indeed! I had only got there, fished for 10mins and landed him, then left!

Cheers lads, it was a stunner alright, so deep and broad with that wicked hooked kype, was one for the wall for sure if I'd kept it, but might get Martin Simpson to paint it instead. The footage is a bit average, but useable, you can certainly see the 'run-around' he gave me!

So happy I decided I could not better it, quit fishing and just arrived back in Wellington!

On a #16 nymph, standard Taupo Indicator rig, but scaled right down for a 6 weight. I had to get well above the fish to get the flies down to him as was sitting quite deep in the current. Took it right at the end of the drift!

top fish there Andrew. Have fished all the rivers in that area on a regular basis since 1982, all times of year, all hours of the day. Never had a fish that size even though I've targeted them from time to time.

Reminds though of a young lad, aged about 7 or 8 who, in the 1980's, I coached how to cast a spinner on a crappy little rod - hadn't caught a fish before but landed a 12lb Brownie.

. . . and my daughter who has only ever caught one snapper. probably went around 15lbs - bigger than any of those caught by me.

that's fishin'

Thanks John, very true words! Daniel, cheers, have looked at the footage, it's a bit average, in my excitement, I forgot to push record on the best bits and used the wrong pose with the wrong camera... (Long story!) But it's useable, so will string something together - no lead up, just cast - hookup - photo - go home, in that order!

Just have to edit today's trip as well now... too little time! Back to reality today catching 3lbers...!
