Broadbill have been on the "serious" bucket list for me for a couple of seasons now and having had a crack at them at night time without success and with the only thing I ever got close to being a container ship at 3.30am on the Garden patch, the day time options have looked most appealing.
This has been season two of giving them a go during the day with the current scorecard showing 2:0. We had a crack earlier in the season with a couple of Bluenose coming on board as a by catch and 2.5hrs on a fish we could only presume was a Broadbill and the line parted company with us on that one.
Easter was shaping up well with a seriously tasty weather pattern presenting itself and with a couple of mates on board ..... namely Boulder and Parry we were off to hit the garden patch and surrounding areas.
Wednesday afternoon saw us putting up to the Cavaliis where we overnight ed ready for an early start the next morning.
Thursday didn't quite work out to be the 5knt variable day we were hoping for so the decision was made to troll for Marlin and ease our way up to Cape Karikari which would be our based for the next few days. Nothing was dumb enough to pop its head up for us but we did manage to secure some good baits for the following few days and have a good shake down for the lads on board.
Friday saw the 1st real day on the bottom bashing and after a brief troll in the morning up through the Parengarenga Canyons we found ourselves back on some secret marks on the garden patch and we loaded up on Bluenose, Gemmies and a real nice Bass to Boulder on the Electric Reels.
It was getting late in the afternoon, so we decided on a drop or two on some bait I had marked in 500+ m. The 1st few drops were a no show but the 3rd was the winner hooking up on what was initially though to be a dirty old Gumboot but once the fish showed itself we were stoked to see that it in fact had a bloody big sword on its head ! ! ! 50 minutes later and the fish was in the boot and I was over joyed to have finally ticked that one of the bucket list. A fantastic milestone both as an angler and boat owner to have secured the 1st Broadbill.
The New Talica 50ii and Custom Calstar doing the Biz ! very very happy with this combo !
Saturday was another big day of bottom bashing around the garden patch with Parry getting into the action with a Nice Striped Marlin which came in and smashed the Long Corner and that made two really nice biguns for the chiller .
The last day rolled round and with the garden patch looking more like Queen Street on a Friday night it was time to head south and do some prospecting for Swords on the way back to Paihia.
A couple of likely spots were marked on the Simrad and off we went. We gad a shot on another feisty wee Stripey which wouldn't hook up and the 2nd drop into Boulders crack we had a typical Sword Hook up and and we were in with the 2nd sword for the trip and Boulder had also signed off on a very significant milestone !
Well what can one say but WOW ! ! . It was an incredible weekend which went beyond all expectations. We would have been super happy with just the one shot at a Broadbill but we were gifted with another and with all 3 of the crew getting into the action we couldn't really ask for anything more !
Happy Fishing everyone and I hope you enjoy the week Video !
