Well done to Zarn Reichardt for landing this Amberjack while fishing just off North Cape. These fish aren't normally found in nz waters as they usually reside in Australia and the Pacific,

Thanks for everything you did for us Eric. may you rest in peace, You were one of the real legends of NZ recreational fishing

Would be cool to see more Amberjacks here. Apparantly Almaco jacks and Sampson fish have been also seen here in very warm summers.

i used to have a photo which was sent to me from a guy on Gt Barrier NZ, he caught one on one of my Lethal Lures 20 odd years ago, weighed in at 26lb, caught just outside of Tryphena Harbour.
considering there was also a Wahoo caught this year as well the odds on we could have an influx of these fish,
wouldn't that be great to add new species to target??
Thanks for everything you did for us Eric. may you rest in peace, You were one of the real legends of NZ recreational fishing

Thanks Eric, that's interesting Thumbs Up That makes a total of three fairly large amberjacks in NZ waters I've heard of, two of which I've now seen pics, also a couple of pics of small almaco jacks (but have seen myself and probably a lot more common) but yet to lay my eyes on a fair dinkum pic of an NZ caught Samson fish.

Finding all these top fish straggling to N.Z waters makes fishing all the more exciting. Just never know what may come your way.

A few years back a small group of Sampson Fish were observed hanging around an oyster farm in Mahurangi harbour. Following year the same group returned there.

Wahoo in NZ full time would be epic. jig sales would go through the roof and we wouldn't need to be gaffing every marlin we got if we had hoo on tap!
