Recently we went into the Ureweras. We have been going regularly for a few years. We used to use the Peter Carty type foam cicadas i.e. high viz. However because of overuse or education the trout simply ignore them. We reverted to the old classic deer hair cicada invented by that bloke up near Tauranga. One fly was mangled to bits but kept on performing. It got kissed quite a few times. The deer hair construction lead us also to dragging it thru the water column like a muddler minnow. It pulled out a stubborn big fat rainbow which refused every thing else.Like the Concorde a timeless design.Wink

Been using the Manic True Cicada's of late, jesus the are soooo lifelike!!!! But my stable is the good 'ol Clarks Cicada... you can't beat it! Just something about the density of Deer Hair that is more natural the way it sits in the surface film and not floats above it like foam body versions - very durable as well.

But there is one modification I make to all my Cicada's when new, and that is to add with a Vivid, black body stripes on the main body, really gives the realism a lift... to me anyway, probably makes no difference to the trout, but you gotta "think like a fish" to catch fish!

The originals have always been tied in a variety of colours, mottling and with visible posts as well in several configurations. Umpqua for some reason only produced them in the Green and Brown.

Don't they make them to your specs? Mottled would be awesome, variegated green/brown - just too many steps at the price point perhaps?

The green one is but anything new requires a lot of paperwork. The tying steps are bugger all different.

We were back in the mist country 2 weeks ago. We nailed 2 fish that we had been trying to get for the last 3 years in different pools. Once again the worlds best cicada did the trick. The rest do not compete with Clarks cicada.
