Has anyone here either looked into or successfully imported a new or second hand boat from South Africa?
Freight, maf, Gst and duty a given. What else?
Was there ever 2 stroke motor import restrictions put in place?

'Bounty hunter' if you read this I vaguely remember you looking into the c-ski. Did it not work out?

...and most SAn boats would come with twin engines. If you get one, go for a Ski-vee they're amazing. Diving boats and beach launches are easy as.
Never underestimate and old man with a spear gun ;)

1. Price - a well set up boat is 15k. Even if it cost you 8-10k to get it over here it's still cheaper.
2. I recon the set ups they have for beach launching/retrieval would be awesome here. Break trailers and motor brackets to kick them up when coming in.
3. Twin motors, I like the idea of a 4-5m with twin 40's or 50's.

If you're lucky you might find one on TM that's already been imported :)

I was looking at a US boat mag and get a 5m new boat, trailer and 90hp yamy on the back for under 15k usd. Now that is cheap. I understand there are costs with bringing it over but worth looking into

Trailers here are a joke. Wack on a new plate and re register it as home built.

Also if boat has any hint of dirt chances are you will get charged steam cleaning fees. Best find out where in usa is cheapest port to ship from and then concentrate your search around there so higher chance seller will drop off and save you internal transfer costs. Ask seller to devalue it on receipt and say damaged goods motor for parts only to save you a bit of gst at this end. Also need titles as proof of ownership( ownership pappers). Only buy boat with trailer so easy for them to move around. And be prepared to wait months.

I've looked at this alot in the past. Still no money. Some good boats in SA and know someone here with a C-ski I believe. I would look at American boats as well, I think the process would be more streamline from america than SA.

Fibretech sometimes have some used boats as well if you contact them, even cheaper, and the RAND Dollar is pretty sweet at the moment.

PS: I import cars and bikes from USA, if you ever need any help.

I imported a launch from the US about 16 years ago. Had it for five years. Spent a heap doing it up and got all my money back when I sold it. Best damn deal ever. It was 33 feet long and came from Florida to me in the South Island and was sold to a fella in Tahiti. A very well traveled wee boat.
The current exchange rates make it good at present. Expect to pay 15% GST and 10% duty, on both the purchase price plus the freight if I remember correctly.
On most USA boats you can get a marine survey done. Mine was 8 pages long and included detail to the level of which hose clamps were rusty and needed replacing. Everything that arrived was exactly as they said. Safer way to buy that TM or "some" local boat sales places.
Do or do not. There is no try.

A mate of mine's dad passed away in South Africa a few weeks ago. He has been left his boat. He was going to sell it for R100k ($10k) in SA. The replacement cost in NZ would be $40k easy. I have convinced him to look into importing it into NZ.

Does anyone know who would be the best to import the boat?
Should he arrange it with a south african company or one based in nz?
Will he have to pay import duty on inherited goods?

Cheers

You will be charged 10 percent duties, and 15 % gst on the value+shipping+duty. Also some other fees for MAF etc and container unloading fees etc. Possibly another 1000-2000 guesstimate,

I used to use Eagle global Logistics when I was in SA, they were pretty good. Their name has changed but googling eagle global logistics should get you to the right place.
