Hit the water at 5:15 yesterday and beelined out to the Mayor Knolls for a supposedly quick bluenose fish and then game fish for rest of the day. Bluenose didn't play the game quite to script and eventually we got 3 (5.5, 6.5 and 19.4 kg) which was all we wanted by about 10am. Heaps of sign but not start biting until about 9:30. All the bluenose were full of Roe which is very early.

Trolled the rest of the day around Mayor Knolls into top end of Mayor and then on down to the Penguins, the only life we saw was near Tuhua Reef where there was plenty of skippy schools. Idea was to bridle rig one but they were all too big (4-5 kg) or came in bleeding. No sign of marlin. Good shakedown trip to start the season.

Found some really warm water out of Whakatane today and some areas that were packed with bait.  Got pretty excited when we came across this bait ball but no cigar.
