Hi everyone new to this site and wanting to know if someone could provide some knowledge on targeting marlin out from the cavallis? A few mates and i are heading up on the 12th feb from Tauranga for a week and keen to know the following.
How far out from the cavallis do you have to go before dropping your lures in? What depths do you follow?
Would you head north or east?
We are only fishing in trailer boats, what would be the top three lures you would use?
Are mahimahi running?
Any help would be appreciated

Thanks

Welcome to the forum

Sounds like you and your mates are trying to plan this trip well in advance and that's cool to see.

I haven't ventured up those ways just yet but I think the answer to a couple of your questions can only be assessed when you are on the water?
I guess the first thing I do when ploughing new waters is to check out the bath charts and scope out any likely looking spots that could potentially hold fish. Try  and keep an eye on here for the game fishing reports and be smart about how you ask and try get information out of other fnet members as nothing beats local knowledge at the time. Subscribe to a SST site and learn how to read the charts especially water temp, sea surface heights, chloro and current.
Depth: again try and pin point where the fish are holding ( stripes can be anywhere from 40m onwards, blues 150m and deeper, blacks can be around to especially around reefs )
Top three Lures: nobody can tell you what that will be. Pick the right lures for the target species and conditions and make sure they are running well.

WE could all go on and on and on and on but the reality is that the ebst way to get some Intel on the Whangaroa area is to read the previous 10 pages :)

Thanks for the map mate. If you were new to the area, would you head straight to the nine pins then towards canyons?
How far out are the nine pins from the cavallis?

Yep exactly what Zac said. Sounds like your planning on going on a boat trip rather than targeting a marlin. Pick your spot and be confident, give the area some time and if the bait and signs are there, plough the area hard. Don't go on a boat ride

How big did the sword go yesterday that was caught on the electric reel and ledger rig?
Heard the guys on the radio but didn't hang around at the club to see them come in. Congrats to the crew. Not a bad outcome for targeting bluenose

On Sunday July 12, Auckland’s Shanon Imms and long-time Dargaville fishing buddy Doug Hanley, along with his teenage son Cameron, set out on an early morning mission from Whangaroa Harbour.
They caught a few bluenose, but then the action slowed and they were about to leave when one more small bluenose was hooked.
However, the fish appeared to ‘fall off’ - and then the rod loaded right up again in a big way.
Thinking it was a shark, and with two of them having commitments later in the day, they really ripped into it, putting around 20kg across the rod-tip.
Imagine their surprise when, after two hours, up popped a broadbill beside the boat.
Fortunately for them the fish appeared to have ‘drowned’, having been lassoed around the middle by the dropper rig.
Back at Whangaroa it was put over the club’s weigh-station, the scales registering 309kg.

Heres the pic...
