Is there a way to tie a snell hook when you dont have a trace but tied directly to the mainline?

Its easy enough to tie a snell hook when I have a trace length, but what if I want to attach directly to the mainline and especially if I want a second hook snooded a couple inches up?

Any diagrams appreciated.

My brain hurts trying to think if it is possible, but I dont think so. I just snip a length of mainline, snell a couple on and then back to back uni onto the mainline again. Only takes a few minutes.

yep thats what i usually do and to be fair my leader is usually thicker line. but Im positive there is another snell method than the one listed above at PFK site (which is a wealth of information for those new to snelling). im sure the other snell method works for a single hook, ie tag end going through, but cause there is no cut line at the other end there is no way to snell the second. my other option is to leave it free running and simply half hitch the tail of the whole baits, which i would likely do either. touch choice, double uni adds an extra failure point but the double snell is a better method than letting a free running hook slip down and cause poor bait presentation.

You've got this version too which would work on a main line:

yep thats the version i was thinking and tying the upper hook on first and leaving 6 inches of line at the end to tie the last hook on about 2 inches below.

depending on what hooks your using and how easy/quick you want to tie it....

the simple snell is very fast and is 100% strong because it really is not a knot its just twisted line...

you need both end free when tying this knot... make sure you pull it up tight when finished otherwise it is likely to come undone,
this is what Comm's use to tie their longline hooks on with so it is a proven knot....

Thanks for everything you did for us Eric. may you rest in peace, You were one of the real legends of NZ recreational fishing
