Hunters Bank is probably the number one spot for most kingfish fisherman as it has a proven history of producing a lot of good fish. Jigging is probably the most common method with 200-300g jigs and high speed reels is the tackle to use.
Often over looked in recent years is trolling lures, which is a very effective way to catch kingfish and at times better than jigging. Rapala lures remain a very popular and successful lure to use. Kingfish are being caught all over the place with the bridge at Mana, and Wairaka Point proving successful spots.
The harbour is fishing well for the boaties and kayakers, with some lovely snapper and kingfish being caught along with fat gurnard, and an abundance of trevally particular, around the Ward Island Area.
West Coast has been fishing well when boaties have been able to get out between the gales, though at time the water has been very dirty. But the best time of year for boat fishing is now here, on both coasts and in the Harbour.
In the harbour in particular has been awesome, with good number of snapper, gurnard, spotted sharks and elephant fish being caught throughout. There have been a few kingfish caught at Oriental and Evans Bays, and Seatoun. Making the effort to catch mackerel as live bait is proving to make all the difference to successfully catching kingfish.
Fishing has been really hard on the West Coast but people who have managed to sneak out between the gales have caught a few snapper, however the next three months are the best time of year with the warmer waters and settled weather.
The moki fishing from Palliser Bay to Castle Point has been excellent with several anglers catching three or more in an evening’s fishing. Crayfish, crab and mussel seems to be the most successful bait at the moment. Using these baits on a one hook ledger rig is your best option as you don’t want a secondary hook floating around and potentially snagging on some kelp.
Snapper should start to make an appearance on this coast from now on.
Spotted shark fishing has been a bit patchy but still worth targeting, and these fish are often picked up as a by catch while fishing off some moki beaches.
Pictured is Felix with a nice Snapper and Kingfish he caught shore fishing.
Wishing you all a safe and happy Christmas, and may 2017 be an awesome year for fishing for all of us!
