Wellington Fishing Report 080617

08 June 2017

The West Coast is still fishing reasonably well with a fair few snapper still around, fishing a bit deeper seems to be the go, ie 50-60m is a good depth to try. The kingfish have been unreal the last couple of weeks with jigging being the preferred method. There have been reports of kingfish up to 29kg caught! Take plenty of jigs with you, and make sure you’re good at tying FG’s or PR knots as there are a lot of barracouta around that love a free snack.

The harbour is fishing well for both the boat and shore fisho’s. With good bait schools around there are still a number of kingfish hounding them. Under these bait schools, or just after they have moved off, is producing snapper, gurnard and kahawai. Red cod will be starting to move in and will be in reasonable condition.

Palliser Bay is fishing well for the surfcasters, with good spotted sharks, the odd moki and plenty of red cod. It’s a much nicer time of year to fish here as you have a chance of a good mixed bag of fish species.

Plenty of awesome fishing to be had in the next month so get out and enjoy these crisp mornings, nothing beat is.

Tight lines – and keep warm!
