The weather the last two weeks has been outstanding with almost all Coasts being fishable.

The West Coast.

Boat fishing is still exceptional with big berley sessions and strayline baits working well on the larger fish. Lure fishing has been very good with Jitterbugs and Rock Hoppers in orange or silver being the flavour of the month.

The West Coast will continue to hold good snapper and plenty of trevally and a few gurnard for at least the next month, so don’t pack away your fishing gear just because daylight saving has finished. If ever there was a good time to get a trophy 20lb snapper or the elusive 10lb trevally it is now.

The Harbour and South Coast is chokka with Anchovies, and huge schools of Kahawai are being caught in large numbers by shore and boat fishermen. Now is the time of year to start targeting some of the fat gurnard, trevally and elephant fish that are now feeding up before winter. There are still good kingfish being caught at a number of reefs outside the Harbour Entrance, it is well worth towing a couple of Rapalas on your way to your fishing spots, or between them, as with all the bait around there are still good numbers of kingies.

Surfcasting has been great up the West Coast for larger snapper, the numbers of fish around now are not as prolific as the height of summer, but the fish are bigger. On the South Coast Palliser Bay is an awesome place to go this time of year as there is a big variety of fish available whether it is kahawai, red cod, rig or tope, there is a good choice of eating fish to be caught.

Boat Hot Spot for the West Coast is off Pippinui Point in about fifty metre. This can be an exciting depth to fish as you will get a variety of fish.

Shore Hot Spot is Opau Bay this is a little bit of a walk from south of Makara Beach, this area can provide some exciting fishing this time of year for rig and trevally and also can be sheltered from an early winter southerly.

Make sure you don’t pack away the boat, or your surf rods, as the fishing truly can be spectacular. You may find the bite time will be shorter but more aggressive, be prepared!

Tight lines
