Upper Hauraki Gulf fishing report 010817

01 August 2017

It's alive out there people!

Headed out from Sandspit with my long time fishing buddy John Eichelsheim, accompanied by NZFN staff member Sarah Ng, a super keen novice. I tried to put her off with tales of freezing conditions and probably slow fishing, but she wouldn't be deterred. I got the freezing part right but the fishing actually turned out to be really good. A little bit of tuition quickly saw Sarah on track, and within fifteen minutes of starting fishing she'd caught her first snapper - a nice specimen around four pounds. We got a bunch more over the course of the day, and it was interesting to see quite a few gannet work-ups occurring hard against the Kawau Island coastline. Yellow was again the colour (5" seemed better than 7"), even though John was determined for this not to the case, but in the end he had to admit defeat. We caught snapper to around 4kg in all depths, and John almost became the hero he hooked a huge kingfish, which we chased around for the next hour, finally breaking the trace with the fish showing on the fish-finder 10m below.
