Hauraki Gulf fishing report - Mangawhai Heads to the Mokohinau Islands

  • General Saltwater, Auckland and The Hauraki Gulf

Well what a start to the year. Kingfish seem to be on the bite where ever we go! The deep pins are fishing well and we have had some good days catching and releasing over 20 fish per day with one day we 40 fish and most on jigs. Some of the most exciting fishing we have had this year is right off the beach at Mangawhai Heads.

Nice size kingfish have been harassing the jack mackeral schools making for exciting fishing in only 10m of water! We have been raising fish on topwater in these areas as well. If you're interested in a charter this summer please get in quick as we only have a handful of days left before we depart for Oman chasing GT's in April, do not forget about our casual charters if you are struggling to make up a full group.

Check out our booking calendar and look for the days we have spots available.  We have been using the new Shimano Ocea Pebble Stick Jigs in the past few months and have had great success. There's a great range of colours and what we are finding is that inexperienced jiggers are getting great results as the jig does not need to be worked as aggressively as most other jigs.

On three trips out this year the "White Glow" colour in 300gms has caught the biggest fish by first time jiggers! Check out the jigs on the Shimano website here or at your local tackle store. Our last trip offshore saw us in 19.88 degree blue water, so its not going to be long before those marlin start showing up around the Mokohinau Islands.

This season we have made a few changes in how we target our fish so we should be able to take advantage of any marlin that may be feeding within and around the kingfish. Bigger bait slow trolled in and around the areas will pick up some of those marlin feeding on the same baitfish as the Kingi's.

Our first "Kingi School" starts in January. These schools are a great way to brush up on your skills and techniques when targeting kingfish. The courses are going to be based at our new lodge and includes a nights accommodation, tuition/tackle and rigging talk and then you get to put it all into practise the next day fishing offshore at the Mokohinau islands. These schools are being run with host Mandy Kupenga from the TV show "Get Your Fish On" and Tony. The courses have been selling out fast and we will be setting dates soon for the winter big kingi run.
