Hauraki Gulf Fishing report - Diversity - 121115

  • General Saltwater, Auckland and The Hauraki Gulf

Huge schools of bait fish are being shadowed by the increasing snapper schools in the Gulf and the fishermen are really enjoying the action. It's such a great time of year for just about any form of snapper fishing and we have been using a range of jigs including the Japanese style Kabura jigs, Inchiku jigs, knife jigs, slow fall or flutter jigs and soft plastic lures.

They all are working but the best are the Ocean Angler range. The OA lures have a UV coating, quality paint finish, great colours and sturdy hooks and the snapper love them. The best colours seem to be orange and greens at the moment which are always great spring colours. Pink has also featured this week too.

Fishing in depths of about 40-50m is where the best action has been but as the season progresses the snapper are moving in closer to spawn and will soon be right on out doorstep at Gulf Harbour. Being based at Gulf Harbour is most advantageous due to its proximity and location in the Hauraki Gulf. In a matter of minutes you can be catching fish.

For those wanting to head out deeper it is already an hour or so north of the busy Auckland region and the water quality improves dramatically the further out we head. So does the fishing and the species list! Most of our trips this week have been 8 hour day trips with very good catches of snapper, gurnard, kahawai, trevally, a few kingfish and john dory too. Live baiting has produced both the kingfish and john dory and we have found no shortage of jack mackerel and slimey mackerel to tempt the fish with.

We mostly fish these over big reef structures and from time to time XXL snapper will move in and scoff a live bait too. The upcoming week looks good with settled weather and light winds so we will be out there doing all week and will keep you posted on the action

Tight lines and screaming reels,
Captain Damo.
