The weather has been brilliant over the past month meaning we have been able go wide and enjoy a vast area to fish.
We have been hunting the numerous kingfish in the Hauraki Gulf at the moment and there are some good sized ones available to the resourceful angler. While jigs are working some days we are finding the live baits are more consistent for the larger specimens.
We have also been finally finding some bigger snapper after a couple of months of pannies being the norm. We are finding these fish out wide over the sand along the outside of the cable zone and over towards the middle ground 4-5nm west of channel Island. 130-200gr kabura and inchiku style slow jigs and orange gold seeming to be the best colour.
The new Bruised Banana 140gr Slider has also been effective while the pinks and green/reds have slowed down for us. We have also been coming home with Jon Dory which is a nice by-catch and we have been getting these at Channel Is, the Coro barges and a lump we found just north of Flat rock.
Once this bad spell of weather is over we can’t wait to get out there again as we have found some intense mammal and bird workup action over the last week.
See you out there!
Cheers Capt Nik (Snap)
