Hauraki Gulf & Coromandel fishing report 261016

  • General Saltwater, Auckland and The Hauraki Gulf

Hi fellow Fishnetters

The spring workups are still going strong and seem to be concentrated in 2 areas at the moment (the mammals are spending about a week at a time in one area then moving as the bait is devoured). The dolphins are either herding up the bait North and NE of Gannet rock one week and then they move over at the Tiri to Kauwau line for the next, so you need to be prepared to move if it has died.

This is great during the week and on days when it is windy as the traffic on the water is minimal and you are able to settle into some nice drifts through the exhaust/burly trail. This is very frustrating on the weekend when the workups and fish are there but the burley/bait is not concentrated because inconsiderate boaties in the hundreds decide to converge on these amazing spectacles of nature and drive into them at speed busting it up!

50m squiggles (just north of Anchorite)

This area always fills with bait and snapper around this time of year. We find long drifts across this area will produce good sized snapper, kingfish and gurnard. Over the last labour weekend we have been going here to get away from workups and the weekend warriors in their hundreds. We are finding the fish here to be of average pannie size at the moment (40-50cm), with the odd bigger one thrown in for good measure.

We are using 130-140g Inchiku and Kabura style jigs in pink and green/red the best colours at the moment (we use Jitterbugs and Sliders on the FishnDips charter).

We have also found another area just SE of this area that is holding some bigger snapper (70cm plus). We tend to fill the bin with the pannies first and then venture to this spot at the end of the day to get a few bigger specimens for our clients.

Tiri to Kauwau line

The main workups started on the western side of the cable zone around shearers rock a couple of weeks ago. It has been going off all the way down this line with the most concentrated workups around the halfway mark. The afternoons seem to be the best (after 12pm) and we have been heading out wide first in search of sign before venturing into the mayhem. We are finding some good fish on the outside (eastern side of the cable zone) in 46m with no workups but just a bit of bird activity to show us where the bait is.

I had an experienced crew on board the other day and 2 of them decided to use softbaits/plastics in the workups instead of our “go to” jigs. This was a good idea and all the biggest fish were caught on softbait/plastics while the pannies were caught on jigs.

I think that the next area to really hot up will be over Coromandel way and am looking forward to some good fishing over there in the next month or so.
See you out there!

Cheers
Capt Nik (Snap)
