Hi fellow fishnetters.
Well, the great baitfish/work-up fishing has continued over August and into September. Here are some of the areas we have been fishing.
There have been some massive dolphin and gannet work-ups in these areas over the past couple of weeks. One day can be red hot and the next not so good. Try long drifts (and repeat), and don’t rush off to the next work-up like the kahawai do if you want to get into snapper. Seems to be an afternoon bite at the moment (2-3pm onwards).
There is a red algae bloom from the top of Coromandel down to this area at the moment. Not sure how it will affect the fishing over the next month…
This area is still working really well and holding good fish, even if the birds aren’t working (try soft-baiting the area in close and out in 30 metres). The gannets from Gannet Rock do not have to go far for a feed. Sometimes the best fishing is when there is a small group of gannets diving rather than massive work-ups (more snapper and less kahawai). Yesterday we got a few snapper under this type of work-up after a hard day’s fishing on the way home (about 1nm nor’-nor’west of Gannet Rock).
The pilchards have been pushed right into the land as I said in my last report, and we found a huge work-up in the Challenger Bay area two Sundays ago. There were gannets rafted-up close by, resting while their mates fed up in 1-15 metres of water. Then they would swap just like shiftwork. Here is a video I took in two metres of water: https://www.facebook.com/Snapfishing/videos/527653134101202/
It was hard to reach the snapper through the bully kahawai, but we managed some nice fish once it moved out of the bay into 20 metres.
Check out what we have been up to on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/Snapfishing/ or send an email to [email protected] or txt me on 021 596 074.
Cheers,
Capt Nik (Snap)
