Hauraki Gulf fishing report 061216

  • General Saltwater, Auckland and The Hauraki Gulf

The workups have slowed down a bit over the last couple of weeks. Although there have been heaps of whales and dolphins around the 40m mark feeding, the snapper have been slow on the bite. Some days we are getting our limit with no workups around and others it looks like it is all going to happen with the mammals and gannets but it is hard work.

North NE and East of Gannet Rock (40 m)

We have been getting mixed bags from this area as the water temp has risen to 20 degrees and the fish slow down their feeding and move into spawning mode. Bait seems to be working on anchor to get a feed while we are not getting as many but still getting some nice snapper and big kings on the jigs.

Inner harbour

Paul Senior and I decided to give this area a quick fish yesterday (5th Dec) as it can be quite good now as the outer gulf slows down.
We dragged softbaits along the bottom in the rod holders as this is an effective way to catch them in here. There were heaps of small tentative bites and then we came over an area of pannies and they were quite aggressive on the bite (off the container wharf and straight out from Westhaven Marina entrance).

Paul was using a 1oz jighead, rootbeer gold zman jerkshad, 12 lb leader and loads of secret sauce in flavour in “Drag Juice”. He let heaps of line out and dragged it along the bottom so he could feel the rod tip ticking. I was using a 60gr Slider (Green and Red) and I just dropped to the bottom and did a slow wind about 5 turns and then dropped and repeated. Both types of fishing worked.

See you out there!
Cheers
Capt Nik (Snap)
