The peninsula has had plenty of rainfall during the last 2 weeks which has seen the snapper move away from the coast from where they have been - in close in depths of ten metres or less!
They will soon move in again however more likely to depths of twenty to thirty metres will be offering the best results. There also seem to be plenty of small snapper around and anyone fishing bait is being plagued by them so it’s a good time to use alternatives like softbaits.
Micro jigs are proving deadly also and can make the difference between scoring some better fish for the table so give them a try. If you want to learn more about catching fish on the micro jigs then please check out my new show as I have just filmed a clip that involves catching them on the Coromandel peninsula (see details below).
Scallops are still plentiful and in great condition with the usual places like Goat Island, Waimate and Opito Bay proving to hold good numbers of them. Diving is a bit tough and the water clarity isn’t great after all the rainfall we have just received so here’s hoping for some better weather in the weeks ahead.
It’s a great time to get out there with the annual snapper migrations starting to happen so get out there when the weather conditions are right.
Some exciting news regarding a new concept show that features kayak use with fishing, diving, spearfishing, hunting and camping. The show is called Reel Screaming Kayaks and is produced by New Zealand company NZ Kayak Fishing – Yak Fish Productions Ltd. Presenter Rob Fort is well known for his filming exploits and has been recognised for this in 2013 winning the best kayak fishing film at the Reel Paddle film festival in Canada.
Since then Rob has been gathering footage over the last couple of years and plans to publish this as well as new footage gathered during the coming season. Topics include destination features, fishing tips, tackle talk, kayak workshops, product features and more. The decision was made to publish the show online through the NZ Kayak Fishing You Tube channel because the busy lives people lead these days that have seen more of us using the internet for watching our adventure water sport shows at our convenience.
The first season will offer a show published every month and is completely different to anything else we have seen in New Zealand. To receive show notifications subscribe to the NZ Kayak Fishing You Tube channel using this url: https://www.youtube.com/user/NZkayakfishing
