The last week fishing out of the Bay Of Plenty has been one for the books, hot sunny days, smooth flat seas, warm blue water and fish that are on the chew!
On Sunday afternoon my crew for the week hit the tarmac after a delayed flight from Sydney and over a cold beer we hatched a plan for the week. With a forecast of variable winds and low swell, the plan was to target big kingfish.
We hit the ground running with the first location we tried. My Garmin screen lit up with big kingy sign hanging off a tighly balled school of jack mackerel. Kingys were on the bite for both live baits and jigs. There was the odd show stopper in the mix that after big runs and bust offs we were left looking at a chafed up leader and thinking....only if we could stop that one!
With the Tauranga One Base tournament being run and the weather gods dishing great weather there where good numbers of striped marlin landed and released. There are still good sized albies in the mix along with a few short bills and mahimahi. Fingers crossed this weather will move off and we can get back out on the water and enjoy the great summer fishing.
