Good morning, well the freezing cold, frosty weather has eased after a few days of very cold mornings and nights. We had temperatures around -3 and heavy frosts with warm and sunny days.
The rain and snow that fell last weekend and been a blessing for both the ski fields and the rivers. The rain pushed some additional volume into all the rivers north of the Tongariro. We have enjoyed some fantastic fishing on rivers in the Kaimanawa catchment as the levels dropped away and the fish moved.
Those that were lucky enough to fish prior to the last weekend too were surprised at the run of fish before the weather hit which has been a pattern that we have seen a lot this winter. All the tributaries have had some sort of pressure but with so much water to fish across there has been plenty of water for most anglers.
Having concentrated on the lower river sections, often few anglers and good numbers of fish that are either moving and or have settled has made for good results. Fish are accumulating right throughout the fishery and are still in good numbers and amazing condition. Plenty are spawning and others just happy to feed.
With the higher lake levels, additional volume and higher water table it’s providing ideal conditions for the wetliners.
River mouths have been calm and have fished well as the rivers that had a little additional volume cleared.
