Taupo Fishing Report April 11-17

  • Trout, Taupo

We are counting down to winter as day light saving has ended and we have lighter brighter mornings. We have had mild days and lots of rain that has fallen overnight for the past week giving us just enough moisture to make the lawns and the weeds grow wildly!

Rivers and lake are still low as the extra volume having been gobbled up with the heaters being turned on with lower temperatures last week. Despite all that the next 10 days are looking really great with sunshine and settled weather just in time for the school holidays.

The long term forecast suggests that the weather is to be a good deal warmer than normal with little rain and lots of sunshine. The hunters and fishos look forward to the southerlies that blow up the island that encourage the deer to roar and the fish to run and at this rate its going to be a bit later.

Rivers are clear and low and the fishing has been a little challenging to say the least. Fish are holding inside the mouths and are still responding to a number of methods, hoppper dropper, dry and a dropper during the warmer part of the day, nymph if overcast and wet in the heavier water in the lower river (Tongariro).

River mouths are well defined and the rips holding together, and as the lake is lower the rips are a little easier to determine. Smaller stream mouths are also good in the evenings night time and often there isnt a soul to be found. Lake O still enjoying some good results though slow, all manner of conditions can be experienced on a day from sunshine, rain, wind and snow, so make sure that you're well prepared.
