NZ Fishing News August issue out now

Welcome to the August edition of NZ Fishing News!

While we have been facing some tough times weather wise over the last few weeks, readers have been out there doing it during the brief breaks in the wintery blasts.

For those who thought the game-fishing season was over, think again. Thanks to some great collaboration among the commercial and recreational fishing fraternity, a bunch of keen anglers trundled down to Waihau Bay and turned valuable intel into southern bluefin tuna action, even catching them on stick- baits. We have the stories and the info surrounding this exciting new fishery in this issue.

More good news on the game-fishing front came from Tutukaka with the tag and release of the season’s first marlin. Kyle Ridling (who else!) hosted Chris Riley aboard his 4.85m Surtees Yonkers, and he released an estimated 100kg striped marlin off the back of the Poor Knights on July 8.

Those who like their action a little closer to home should read Nik Key’s feature on winter fishing in the Hauraki Gulf. His guided and charter parties have been enjoying some fantastic lure fishing under the birds and around the dolphins chasing schools of pilchards and anchovies in 40-50 metres. Nik reckons the action has been every bit as good as the spring work-ups - and he should know.

Experienced paddler Rob Fort also covers off the winter angles relating to kayak fishing, and again, there are few better qualified to do so.

A large contingent of land-based anglers fish the year through. In this issue Gene Bryant, a new contributor based on the Coromandel, shares his tips for getting started, while regular writer Andy Macleod continues his recent theme that focuses on stray-lining off the bricks. The article title ‘Knives to Gun Fights’ indicates the tack he has taken! Kingfish over the flats is covered by salt-fly exponent and new contributor Gian Booysen, who succeeds beyond his wildest dreams and is happy to share the experience.

At this time of year, readers chasing trout are often faced with less-than- ideal conditions. Kyle Dunkle shares some tips and tricks for targeting fish in murky waters. Our Readers Story this month – Bikini Trout – should also pique some interest!

We over off the formation of the NZ Outdoors Party, too. Alan Simmons and David Haynes have been working hard to form a political party to contest the next election late in September. If elected, these guys will give those who enjoy fishing, hunting, diving, tramping and the outdoors in general an independent voice. Despite all sorts of promises, the mainstream and ‘old guard’ politicians have done nothing for the outdoors. Let’s give these guys a chance to represent us by giving them our party vote.

Other features include…

John Eichelsheim – A path less travelled

Josh Worthington – Fishing the Barrier Reef

Mark Kitteridge – Part II of his Niue adventure

Sam Mossman – How to break your rod

Peter Langlands – The many facets of whitebait

Reviews: Boat Show award-winning Extreme 645 Centre Console – Penn Slammer III/Ocean Assassin combos – Maxel Transformer reel/Jigstar Battle Royale rod jigging outfit – Daiwa Saltist Hyper 790 rod and 5000 reel top-water lure combo.

Plus all the other regular features, columnists and reports from Darren Shields, Greg Morton, Gary Kemsley, Bea Bagnall and Tony Orton.

And don’t forget Father’s Day is just around the corner. We have a great subscription offer which will see one lucky person receiving an additional Father’s Day gift: a Bradley original four-tray electric smoker!
