On June 26 this year, NZFN Southern Currents writer Bryce Helm was witness to one of the most remarkable freshwater captures ever to take place. This monstrous rainbow, landed by Antoine Monier from the Mackenzie Country hydro canals, tipped the scales at 36.3lb (16.5kg) - but the truly remarkable aspect of this fish is its length!
When placed on a measuring mat, the fish came in at a phenomenal 106cm long! To put this into perspective, the current IGFA length records stand at 79cm for rainbow trout and 97cm for brown trout. This fish would have shattered both marks, making this fish possibly the longest trout ever landed in the world!
The fish was landed on 10lb braid and 8lb fluorocarbon leader, falling to a small black nymph drifted in the turbulent water around the Lake Ohau outflow. The battle was truly epic, but you'll have to read the August edition of NZ Fishing News to find that out!
