Okuma SLX 10CS reel specs: stainless steel main and pinion gears; two thrust bearings; dual anti-reverse system; carbon drag (with Cal’s Grease); 380-metres 0.42-diameter line capacity; 6:1 gear ratio (equating to 107cm per handle turn); 10.5kg max drag pressure.
Not every fishery in the country is suited to light baitcaster and spin reels. Fishermen looking for a reel for conventional deeper water bait fishing and similar duties might do well to consider the SLX 10CS. Its fast gear ratio also covers jigging applications. A decent handle, smooth lever drag, strong stainless gears and dual anti-reverse make it a decent reel for fish up to, and including, kingies and ‘puka. The test model was loaded with mono – the first time I’d used any for a fair while – so to complete the ‘back to basics’ picture, I tied up a two-hook ledger rig, baited it with hunks of squid, and dropped the rig down for a quick succession of pannies.
Okuma Sensortip Plus rod specs: Integrated solid tip; custom Okuma reel seat; rubber gimbal.
Beside the line-up of sleek Nanomatrix baitcasters and spin rods, the Sensortip looked a bit ‘old-school’ with: full EVA grips; a pipe reel seat with stainless hoods; thick diameter; relatively heavy overall weight; and under- and over-binding. But there is nothing wrong with a tough, dependable rod.
With its clear tip section, it appears to be another in the line of rods that includes Uglystiks, Crystaltips etc, created using the Howald Process. However, this is not the case, as Okuma has come up with a new technology to create a rod that can take the knocks. Upon loading it up with a few fish, I noticed a nice, progressive curve in the rod, with no sign of a nasty ‘hinge point’. In short, this rig combines new technologies to create a dependable ‘old school’ combo.
