Jean Vuarnet sunglasses - product review

These glasses are called Vuarnet after Jean Vuarnet, the French Downhill Skiing Olympic gold medallist in 1960, who aided optician Roger Pouilloux in seeking visibility perfection and top-grade UV protection while on the snow.

In my opinion that technology translates into UV protection the likes of which anglers have long sought. The scratch-resistant properties of hardened mineral glass lenses as opposed to polycarbonate are well known.

If you subscribe to the theory that ‘you only get what you pay for’, you’ll expect the optical quality of the new polarised PX 1000 Vuarnet mineral glass lenses to be excellent. I can tell you that after considerable testing against several other name brands, the new Vuarnet PX1000 polarised lens came out tops for clarity, glare reduction, comfort, style, and eye protection. But, best of all, it opened up the water in a way I have not witnessed in 50-plus years of fishing.

Testing against other brands at the Waitaki and Rangitata Rivers, as well as in the marine environment at Timaru and Otago Harbour immediately proved their superiority, and nothing else came close to them as driving glasses for comfort and cutting the summer glare.

Rated as being scratch and shockproof, this brand features a virtually unbreakable nylon wrap-around-style frame that cuts out the usual ‘wind in your eyes’ problem and maintains clear focus through what’s described as internal anti-glare treatment of the lenses. I have no idea what that means, except it appears to set the Vuarnet brand performance apart from others.

Available in a wide range of mineral-glass lenses, with some predisposed to providing more contrasting vision, or natural vision, or high definition and rich colours, and each offers very high sun protection. With the introduction of the PX 1000 lens, Vuarnet is the new benchmark and the way forward for weary eyes spotting those fish or when driving your boat.

Did my test glasses look like $379 value? In a subtle way they do. The branding is conservative, but I was more attracted to the comfort of the side frames and the fit, and in reality it’s what they do that counts!

They did it well! The maker claims 99.9% of light reverberation is blocked, and from my testing I have to say the Vuarnet range was indeed my eyes’ best friend on the water, in the car, and in the wind!

But don’t take my word for it – check it out for yourself at
