Hi All,
I'm planning a solo trip up north, Northland or the Far North, for the 3rd week of Feb and am looking for some suggestions on good camp grounds, with some reasonable rock fishing locations nearby.
I'm not asking fro anyone to give away there secret rock locations, just a point to the right place to stay, the rest i'll try to figure out myself.
Any help would be much appreacted.
Cheers,
Adam

Everywhere up there is great mate, you really cant go wrong. If you are going to rock fish the popular areas use plenty of burly, if you are prepared to walk in a fair way, no burley needed in many areas. Flick me a PM on where ever you decided to fish, and i'll send through a couple of maps if i know that area, if i dont im sure someone else will be able to help.

The top end of the west coast should be good at that time, more settled in weather and less southerlys hopefully, thats what you want, i cant get over the weather pattern at the moment- there was snow on the Napier- Taupo road 5pm friday night !! mid summer.

I'm curious, is it possible to get down to the beaches on either side of The Cape? I've often looked down and wondered if people do down to fish it. Looks like a nice area to set up for an over night fish.....as long as the locals don't strip and burn your car in the process.

Nothing makes a fish bigger than almost being caught.

North cape is all private access, doc is in there as well but as you will know with most areas what happens there. Access is very limited partly because of those snails . Tom Bowling is excellent fishing, boat access is best.

The Bluff on 90 mile has a camp ground. Gets you close to Scotts Point as well.

Spirits Bay has a campground too. Might even see you there.

Might not be what you're after but my favourite is paying $5 at the Te Kao store for a key to the land by the Paua wharf. No facilities so I only ever stay one night.

Stop at the Houhora wharf on your way up. They're catching Kingies at high tide.

Cheers Guys,
Whats the camp ground at Spirits bay like? Anyone stayed there?
And any other suggestions?
Cheers,
Adam

Hey elf, that's good sh*t! Dint know that was the case with the key to the grounds by the paua wharf, I dint realise there was  wharf there!! Question. Looking on google earth, are there any other fishing options? It looks like there's a reasonable point there at the end of the tributary, does the sand bank open up to casting towards the harbour entrance? Knowing what goes on at Te Hapua that looks incredibly fishy..

Dom, the camp ground at Spirits can be a b*stard for mozzies. If you do camp there camp towards the beach and not back up by the trees and stream. Take plenty of repellant and then some or hope for wind.

Matai bay camp ground is a very good base for multiple spots

Paua wharf is not really a wharf as such, its a bit past it, get the key from the shop, head through the gate and fish the narrows, good fish come round that point, kingfish, bronzies, goos snapper in the 1-4kg range and bigger in spring. As well as good sized trevs. Plenty of dort to, only down side is that people camp right on the points so it can get clogged if you know what i mean

The point

directly behind
the road in haha

hEUgE, I talked to some mates last week who were walking out to get cockles at that island on the sand bank. I think that's where they meant ... tide comes in pretty quick though. That point in Chad's photo or the Western end of that channel are good coz you've got sand to pull 'em up (in theory) ... don't need to go anywhere else ...

The Rarawa camp grounds has to be another option? Run by DOC. Head South towards Hendo's.

Matai Bay is my favourite beach in the whole country. Heaps of kina last time I looked in Autumn. In the shallows too. I hear they're fat now ...

Hey Elf, so the camp ground at Matai Bay is a good one? And worth taking a snorkle and fins too?
Do you know the name of the campsite?
Cheers,
Adam

You can't miss it ... I suppose it's called the Matai Bay campground. Matai Bay is essentially the camp ground (or is that the camp ground is essentially Matai Bay?). Lots of trees in the campground so lots of shelter from the wind.
The water is clear so good for diving. Not much paua but lots of kina. Very sheltered from swells ...
A walk round either side to the rocks should yield some good fishing although I haven't been fishing there myself ... yet.

Chad or JamesD, have either of you fished around the Matai Bay area? Worth a go for a few days?

I have fished on the other side of it, there is plenty of snapper that run through there, in feb though they will be much smaller in the 1.5kg range i'd say, in spring there around 5kg. Be a few bronzies through there to, so keep your eye out, you wont wont to loose to much gear to them. Also trevs and kingfish and what not. Personally i would head north of there, but thats just me. If you want to catch great fish, dont mind walking, i would walk in from scotts with a pack for a few days. Awsome fishing just a bit of hard work......

It's good everywhere up there, it wont matter where you go, you will catch fish.
