 This in from Tony Fox...
Herewith a photo of the 62.14kg big eye tuna caught by Tim Wheeler (Jnr) on 23 dec 09 fishing from the family boat Reel Obsession.
Tim's fish is a pending club and NZ record and I believe the first caught in NZ this season. Also of note his brother Troy is the current club jnr record holder so a family affair indeed.
Also of note we have had our first and probably NZ's first T&R blue marlin caught by Mark McDowell today at 10.00 am.

i hope they got it right Tobes because large Blues dont fold too well either is what i read.... ive only caught one T/R so i wouldnt know an thats the truth.... but those stripes on its body are a worry as well but that dorsal is way too big nearly the size of it body... im not an expert an would love it to be a Black.... photos can be very deceiving at times.....

Thats a Blue no question, just the angle there lethal. There is no curve to the pecs in the pic Bite2000 posted, anal fin is far too big for a black, colouration is definate Blue marlin, dorsal is too high for a black.
Still a beaut fish, congrats to the crew.

Fair point lethal. But its all about the camera angle as the second pic i posted shows it the other way round.
Really need a good full body shot so we can see the head but i still reckon it's a blue.

the main thing is they are out on the water doing it, I am sure if there is any doubt to species then a DNA test will be done, who cares if its a Blue or a Black, its a good fish species shouldnt matter. Same amount of work goes into the preparation and time on the water to get it, lets try and focus on the catch rather than debate from a few average photos what it is

It's just good to get it right. What happens if my missus goes out and cathes a black a few kilos short of that and misses out on a pin or record because some fish has been wrongly id. I know a few of you would be p**sed. I have seen alot of wrong calls made on fish over the years and i belive when question about id then it should be positively id as one. And not two guys standing there going "yep thats a black".
Don't get me wrong i'm not trying to take the glory out of the catch at all. It's might fine!
Whats wrong with questioning it when a few of us think otherwise. This is a forum at the end of the day and we are all free to say what we feel.

Tough one this - Blue is like a cross between a Stripey and a Black - pec may sort of fold on a black if damaged - don't know how well this will come out. Still a good fish.

i agree bite2000 but when zoomed in on this pic i can find the start of the second dorsal fin its still in front of the second anal fin....
so its definitely a Black Marlin....
here is a zoomed in section of the tail from the Blue the boys caught in 2008 very similar size... thanks for uploading this pic guys awesome fish as well... take note the Blues 2nd dorsal is behind the 2nd anal also take note the tail shapes are different Black have a tendency to be bent backwards more to the blues straighter tail which is also a dead giveaway....
personally for me anyway and i hope for some others we can take this as a real learning curve to ID ing the difference between a Black and Blue Marlin while out at sea, so we can get it right if you happen to want to release it, or making sure you have called up the right type of fish you have just landed....

Yep nice BLUE marlin, agree with Short Bait & Adam , nice to have a healthy debate about species, should help newbies identify them better, not sure about weimasters though!!

For me the debate has been interesting in that it is obvious that it is hard to tell with the fish hanging up in front of you - it is going to be tough at sea and imagined the debate would be about striped vs blue not blue vs black. All good for the learning curve.

Both Penny & Pete have caught plenty of bill fish I am sure that they would of debated the species if they had any doubts, best way to prove it will be the DNA test

that fish is defiantly a blue but here are some alternative ways to identify the fish - check the scales blues have large pronounced scales and skin looks like chopped strand fiberglass - blues have raised joints on backbone when slabbed - the blues bill is totally different than a black - if it's a black it's bill will be rounder and very short and thick a blues bill is longer and more elliptical in shape - also if it's a black it's flesh will be white
