Hi was wanting advice for spearing flounder in the Tauranga Harbour. Went down to Rotary Park last night with my neighbour about 10pm 2 hours before high tide and waded around for an hour with only a couple of baby flouder spotted.
Did we go to early for the tide or is there bugger all flounder up there ?
Cheers.

I always go for a dead low tide, just after dusk. Preferably after a few days of a big high sitting over us to clear the water.

Suss out the channels the previous day and then work the edges as the water works its way over the flats. Look for lots of crabholes in the mud, the flatties shouldn't be too far away.

Yakfloundering is much more deadly than wading - No pressure/shock waves to spook them, and you can get to the flats that the waders can't work.

Thanks for that HLD. Is that the case with any others, low tide and creep around the channels as the tide comes in ?

I tried 3-4 different areas around the city 2-3 years ago for pretty much the same results.
Plenty of eels, piper & other baitfish but buggar all flounder.

Perhaps the muddy areas around the top end of Levers Rd ( Wairoa River mouth) could be worth a go.
I had a couple of good nights with a net around that area so who knows?

Piwi I think Rotary Park is dead but I hear that out towards Kati is better Pahoia and the likes.  Also can get Osyters around the Mangroves.  Whats happening with the snaps are they back on yet?

I struggled to get a good feed of snapper on friday morning. Loads of little pickers but not many keepers and they were all congregating round some foul in about 25m off papamoa.
Was using softbaits so didnt hook too many undersize. Hoping the nice 400mm ones are not far away.

we also found lots of throw backs from 24m thru to 27m out off harrisons on friday.
In saying that we got a feed up the harbour in the shallows on thursday night including a nice fat 8lb'er.

there were millions of fish on the sounder at 9 mile but the only things hungry there were 6 inch blue cod.........
