I am thinking of getting a 4.7m centre console. The boats that tickle my fancy are the CC's from Scorpion, Maclay and Surtees (they say the can build the new 4.7 in a CC)
Any comments/advice ?

....if you don't mind getting wet they are ok, do you take your partner fishing?, they hate getting wet! Mac do their hulls in cc as well, very stable at rest.

Wet & cold. No storage. They are great to fish from on nice warm windless days.
Had one, a Buccaneer ... never again.

Saw a new McLay 5m cc. It was slick and very p o r n o! Had plenty of storage under the front deck area and in the console. Would be a fantastic boat for doing salt water fly from.

Thanks for the replies fellas! I have made up my mind on the size and layout I want and was hoping to get some response from owners or people who have been in some of the mentioned boats. Carbine, I have read that test and contacted Surtees straight away about building it as a CC. They say it is no problem. It seems like a very nice hull.
Bender, I have a 620 Rayglass and a 380 Stacer Seasprite. I far prefer the open Seasprite to fish from. It is very well fitted out and organised and storage is no problem. I very seldom fish with bait so do not need a lot of storage space.I plan to sell them both and go for something in between. I don't mind a bit of spray now and then and for my purposes the cabin on the Rayglass is a waste of space!

mate i went through what your going through now 4 years ago.the scorpion has a poor build quality.they seem to be almost as flat in the v as a dory.and when we test drove it it pouned.we ended up getting a 5.5m surtees cc.top boat .the 4.7 seems to be a cut off 5.5.good build.very dry stable at rest with the flooding keel.cant speak hyly enough of it.

Yeah, I am definitely leaning towards the Surtees. I agree the deadrise on the Scorpion is a worry and the Surtees will probably hold it's value better too. Do you have some pics of your deck layout? I like the idea Brown has in another thread about a raised foredeck with storage space underneath. I would probably also go for a 60 fourstroke Yammie rather than the 40 Honda they fitted to the test boat. That 40 seems a bit marginal to me!

Hi I got a 5.35 Scorpion C/C that is a beaut ride. Dont be put off by a moderate vee at the back cos C/C s ride much better than the cabin variants and have better speed for the same RPM which means more miles per litre. My boat is just 1 year old and has a great build quality, dry for a C/C, rides well and great fishability. Guys on the forum reckon the smaller Surtees are a wet boat.

You can't know much about boats if you are comparing a mac cc to a surtees. i have sold my mac and now own a 4.7 surtees no comparison at all. the mac is a wet boat wave thumping pig handling . the surtees is an awesome wave cutting very dry boat. very highly recomended to call a surtees dealer and atleast try one..., highly recomended ..you wount be wasting your time

Thank you for the advice bigjafa. I think you are confusing a Mac with a Maclay. I certainly do not think I know everything about boats - that is why I asked fellow forum members for their opinion! I do agree with your choice though and will take delivery of a centre console 4.7 Surtees next Wednesday (my 8th boat)

No problem BH, I will do the electronic fit out over the weekend and post some pics then. I noticed in the write-up they mention a problem with too much weight in the back - hopefully mine will be OK as I have the battery in the console and have the fuel in an under floor tank under the console so quite a bit of weight will be removed from the transom.

I picked the little Surtees up from the factory at Whakatane on Friday. The end result is better than I was hoping for and the boat just looks right!
The centre console is not too wide to leave enough space to move around and the windscreen folds down for trailering and garaging
The cockpit is huge for a boat of this size. Fuel is underfloor, battery in the cc and the area where the battery normally go is now a lockable compartment - neat!
The area in front of the centre console easily accommodates one soft bait casting fisho.
I took it for a little shakedown this afternoon from Takapuna and she handled the slop extremely well.
One happy chappy!

Thanks for the kind words! Launching and retrieving is a piece of cake for 1 person. The complete rig on the trailer with the 60hp four stroke apparently weighs less than 650kg. Yes, Keith, it has a flooding ballast in the keel with a shut off flap to lock the ballast in for added weight when you steam in rough water.

Seadoc - What was the damage for the hull + trailer if you don't mind me asking?
It looks like I will be in the market for a new boat in the 4.3 - 4.7 meter range shortly, so would like to keep my options open.
How is the Surtees stability wise when at rest? I will be freediving out of the new boat, so will be pulling myself over the side to get back in.
|
Posted By: Seadoc
Date Posted: 27 Oct 2008 at 7:23pm
Hi Spearsniper, the hull was $10,000 including the cc and underfloor fuel tank and water separator. To relocate the battery to the cc was $200. The trailer was $3,000. The complete boat with WOF, Rego, 60hp four stroke Yammie, hydraulic steering, painted and Nyalic for the rest (as you see in the 'photo's) was $28,785.
Stability is excellent. You don't have to pull yourself over the side - it comes with a boarding ladder. You are welcome to PM me and you can come for a ride after a fishing trip.
So far the boat has exceeded all my expectations. I took it for a ride on the Manukau today to put some hours on the motor as part of the break-in time. It was fairly rough and it was no problem sitting at 4200rpm doing 40km/h. The ride is amazingly soft. Many people talk about the cc being wet but it did not seem to be a problem. No wetter than most other boats I have owned.
I thought I might as well put down a dredge and the scollies were in excellent condition! The dear one is cooking them while I am typing this! I tried to upload some 'photos but for some reason was denied access!, and cheers Tobez, your advice worked!

Seadoc - looks like there is a sh|t load of deck space on that little boat. Can you advise of the internal and external width of the hull, and the overall width on the trailer.
I tried to get this from the surtees website, but the 4.7 does not feature on there.
I have a concrete pad to put the boat on, and with the house on one side and a fence on the other, I am limited to what will fit.
Thanks.

Spearsniper, the internal width is 154cm, external width 2m, trailer width 225cm. If need be, I think one could move the trailer wheels in by about 5cm a side.
BH, I did quite a bit of reading on the electronics and the consensus seems to be that you get the most "bang for your bucks" with that setup!

Thanks for the dimensions Seadoc.
The trailer would just fit - but less than 25mm clearance on each side. Emailed the guys at Surtees about narrowing the trailer, but a no-go. Their suggestion is to look for a different make of trailer. The Dunbier trailers are 2060mm wide, so fit the bill perfectly.
I am just waiting for the price to come back for the Dunbier before throwing down a deposit for a 4.7CC.
Having had a couple of outings to get a feel for the boat, is there anything you would change if you were to get another one built?

Hi Spearsniper, The only thing so far that I would change would be to fit handrails to the cc for the crew to hold on to. I am very impressed with the performance of the hull and so are the mates who have been on the boat. It really rides like a much bigger boat and is not at all a wet boat. Maybe a shelf in the cc might also give a bit of extra storage space.
Good luck with your purchase! Mine fits inside my garage with centimeters to spare on the top, sides and length.

I managed to sort a trailer. The best priced multi roller trailer was GT Trailers, and they will customise it to make it 100mm narrower. For an additional $150 they will add LED lights which is a real bonus for my setup - I have a 4WD that runs 24Volt electrics, and the LED tail lights work with 12V & 24V. No nore having to swap bulbs when I use a different tow vehicle.
The final price of the GT trailer is significantly more than the one Surtees can provide, but will mean that I can get the rig I want.
Just heard about a motor (thanks batfastard), so looks like I will be getting the same setup as Seadoc , just with a different trailer.

Nice looking rig - was the price you paid for the cc set up more or less than the standard hull price. Surtees will have saved on ali and windscreen, but more hours perhaps customising it for you.
Ive got a 10 year old 4.7m Ramco. The size suits me. Easy to tow, easy to launch, not so bad on gas, and can do most things I want to do. Those surtees look like a good replacement - although I'd probably stick to the standard set up.
I see Mclay is doing a smaller version of their boats now too. Been a long time in coming. Always been a gap in the market between a 4m open dinghy to a 5.5 metre cuddy cabin style.

Yes, Nathan, the price is the same, I basically got the underfloor fuel tank thrown in . I agree with your sentiments about the advantages of a smaller boat!

Finally took ownership of my Surtees 4.7 CC
Got the console changed slightly - shelf in it, grab rails, no fold down option required on this one, as it is stored beside the house. On top of the console is a platform to mount the VHF and GPS aerials.
After a small issue with the fuel line being squeezed shut by a cable tie, we took about taking the boat for a spin - just awesome. Mind you the sea conditions were pretty good.
This weeks job is to install the electronics, so I can determine the top speed, fuel economy etc when I am next out.

Hi Seadoc and Spearsniper,
I to have just got a 4.7 cc, will post photos soon.
Have a couple of questions for you. Mine has an etec 60hp on the back and I find I have to give it everything to get it up on the plane, once its up I dont have any dramas, just wondering how you guys get on with your Yamahas. Thinking I might need to change props? I have gone from a 6.2m stabicraft to this so maybe my expectations are a little high?
Also, mine has a top speed of around 30mph/50kph is that similar to yours?
Love how stable it is for a small boat and the fishing room, looking forward to lots to softbaitong once the weather sorts its self out.

Car_nut...mine takes a little to get up and going if the ballast water needs to drain. Otherwise it is really quite quick to get out of the hole.
No idea of the top speed , as I am just fitting the electronics this weekend.

Car_nut, as SS said. I am swinging a 13inch pitch prop and get about 55km/h. I have not really tested the boat's top speed in calm conditions yet and will post some feedback once I have done so.
It is an awesome softbait platform - stable at rest, very large fishing space, economical and cute looking too! I have gone from a 6.2 Rayglass and 3.8 Stacer combo, no regrets!
Congratulations and good luck with your purchace!

Here's the final layout of the CC . As this is used for spearfishing, a sounder with 1000m range is not required. The Lowrance 520c is more than adequate as a sounder, and the GPS and mapping are great. Also means one less device to install. And there's just enough room in the console to install the fuel computer.

Eric... as I see it, ladders are for bubble blowers and swimmers. I can easily pull myself over the side, or pop up onto the port side boarding platform. Another justification for the long bladed fin - saving money on boarding ladders

Q...True. I guess that the boarding 'lip' is just wide enough to sit on it while taking the fins of. Great little feature i must admit. No doubt we will bump into each other at Kapiti or at the ramp one day.
Enjoy your boat mate
cheers Eric
