L/H can you take this to the Politics thread mate cos its not a fishing report.

And its not the Navy's fault the Govt made many serviceman/woman redundant, hence, the younger crew in some areas as they have lost many dedicated senior and experienced personnel which can never be replaced by civilians in other govt departments!Ouch

Ideally that is what should have happened.
However you are correct. Frankly any Navy would be as useless as tits on a bull because of this. The politicians know this, the poachers and their owners know this and so does the media. The politicians are after feel good political mileage. The poachers are after the dollars as are the media.
All that at a horrendous cost to the taxpayer. We all know nothing will happen except for a little table thumping and hot air.

Appalling display of cowardice from the NZ Navy. Health and safety issue? WTF??
Go all the way down there to take photos and do nothing....

First shot goes over the bow, the next one through the wheel house.

yes funny as, they Navy sending inflatables with cameras to film the poachers while hiding behind Icebergs, hahaha total stupidity, did they think the poachers would have cut the 1/2 million dollar net or something???
the film shows the Navy filming them right along side in calm enough seas i would of thought to board without anyone getting hurt,
i guess they had to wait while the net was pulled aboard otherwise they may have got caught up in it,
but even so there are two sides to a boat and while the boat has the net alongside and hauling it in, it cant go any where..

Not entirely sure, but....are you guys sure they were inside NZs Teritorial waters, or EEZ? I suspect they were not, and as such, the navy has absolutely NO legal right to board any vessel in international waters. Not ours, not the USN, so proof of illegal fishing has to be gathered and used some other way.
It is only my overwhelming natural humility that mars my perfection.

we and Aussie are like the guardians to that part of the ocean and every right to enforce the law...
have a look back so many pages on one of the other threads about who have been given customary rights to that area...
there are quite few nations that have a quota they can catch of toothfish but we have the biggest....

Capt A the area is called Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR).

so in some ways what you are saying means it is not our territorial waters is right,
it is something else we are involved in, in conjunction with 24 other countries...

here is a link which can tell you everything you would like to know,
https://www.ccamlr.org/en/organisation/status-convention

if we where not involved why would we be sending a Navy ship to police this area???

Mr McCully said the three ships claimed not to be part of a group but had been observed operating alongside each other.

"This strongly suggests they are part the same illegal fishing syndicate," he said.

The minister said two of the vessels had previously been linked to the Spanish-based syndicate Vidal Armadores SA.

All three of the ships claimed to be flagged to Equatorial Guinea.

The fishing boats would have known that sinking them isn't a viable option in that part of the world, potential for pollution too great. It's a shame, because that is what should be happening (just on a very stormy day so that the resulting oil slick breaks up quickly).

If sinking isn't an option, what else do you do to stop a boat that isn't wanting you to board? Given that the average in-water lifespan for a man overboard in those waters is well less than 10 minutes...

The Government has asked Interpol to put alerts on the vessels, named the  Kunlun, Songhua and Yongding to prevent their catch being unloaded.

seriously, do they think it will stop them from off loading their catch onto another ship while still at sea???

Much of the remaining information gathered was classified top secret.

ho hum, unless you where listening/recording any Satellite phone conversation they may have had with the owners then whats secret about some Video/photos taken which Sea Shepard managed to get as well plus remove their nets which was more effective than what our Navy did.

well now we will have to wait a year or two while the Goverment works out what they need to do, in the mean time the below agencies will be milking it for all its worth when just a couple of rounds would have made them think twice about ripping off the tooth fish with illegal Gill Nets.

once an analysis of the evidence, including where the vessels came from, by a Government multi-agency working party was completed.

Thanks for everything you did for us Eric. may you rest in peace, You were one of the real legends of NZ recreational fishing
