Hey guys

Hoping someone can advise on the most northern boat ramp in NZ that is legit for launching a good sized boat?

Is it Parengarenga Harbour?

Never been past Whangarei with Boat in tow. Also what are the roads like as you hear the further North you venture the more shaddy the roads become?

Cheers

Parengarenga is your best shot.  The guys in the LBG club often shoot right round to Tom Bowling from there.

Roads are fine mate, the road to this particular ramp is mostly loose metal.

You need to pick up a key for the Paua Road ramp in Parengarenga. It's at the last shop on your right before you get to Paua (about 15 minutes beforehand).
Only when the last tree has died and the last river has been poisoned and the last fish caught will we realise we can't eat money.

Paua is basically a beach launch, then over a bar, not much fun if an easterly swell is running, what size boat do you have if you are thinking about going to the Kings.  You maybe better launching from Houhora where there are two all weather ramps and a safe harbour entrance.

Paua is the furtherest north. Unless you have a tractor or two 4 x4s to launch from the beach.   Watch the bar if swell is running an work with the tides. If in doubt hohora is mint but another 16nm.

I've seen fairly decent sized boats launched on the top of the tide at Taputaputa.  Don't know what the state of the creek is at the mo but. To get there follow the road to the Cape it's the last road on the rhs heading to the Cape.  It's sealed to the intersection last k or 2 is gravel.  Also on the easterlies Scott Point is a viable launch point too.  Scott Point, drive up 90 mile to the end. That's it.  Or up to Te Paki and down the creek to the beach and hang a right.

Just read your post properly, Cbro is right, Houhora is probably your best bet.

Yeah Para will break in half a meter of easterly swell.
Don't use it unless you have a good forecast for coming back as well!

Be  aware when you round north cape it's a different world also water wise and even in a good westerly swell (which you think would be fine on the east coast) sometimes waves wrap around the top and set up swell you don't expect to find, with the wrong wind it's not much fun.
Be flexible I guess Is what I,m saying.

have fun "Hammering" our far north kingfish but try not to kill to many please.

There was just a trawler up there working and I bet they took a hiding poor buggers.

I guess that's bad of me to say on here but it's how I feel, nothing personal to anyone out there.

Lots and lots of guys shoot up from Hohoura, if in doubt that's my pick.

I hear you Garry, re hammering Kingies. Does anyone actually ever take more than one Kingie home?
I mean, that's a ton of meat and they freeze like cr#p (compared to other species).
I don't condone the guys who bring back a chilly bin of fish then wander the streets looking for people to give it to / justify it. I swear some of them I know do it just to look macho.
Less today leaves more for tomorrow

I take more than one, usually keep two to make it worth while firing up the smoker. One for the boat an one for myself.
People do appreciate a feed of fish, exspecially the elderly. I'm never complaining when some one drops off a cray or scolly, I'm not allowed to dive so rly on others generosity.
if it's not going to waist I can't see the problem.
I try not to keep big fish if I can help it...more than a spawn thing I'd like some one else to enjoy catching it too.

Be wary to KS. the roads are pretty shocking up here at the moment. have done some axle  damage from here to Marsden in the last few weeks. lots of very uneven surfaces and patch work from the last lot of storms that haven't been rectified yet. not impassable by any stretch but can be a little heavy in the hull

If the swell is right for Parenga (1m is usually ok or slightly more if you are crossing on the incoming close to high) you are best launching your boat at either low or high tide. It isnt any good 2 hours each side of that as the sand flattens out and it isnt deep enough to launch without drowning ya truck.

The bar does get pretty shallow but it is a pretty short bar so you can sit and wait for a lull before hitting it.

As said above you need to grab a key from the te kao store. 10 bucks a day and easy as.

We were up there a few weeks ago with a 7.5m boat and the roads were a bit bouncy as mentioned above but not a trip killer. Just make sure you have a spare tyre or two.

We have thought about making the trip to the kings a few times and parenga is where we would leave from if we do it. Just need a mint forecast, time off work and plenty of gas.
