Hey team,

I've just been leant a rod (Ocean Devil) and a reel (Stella 8000) for a month or so from one of the good guys on here to get me into topwater (stickbaits)

If you were going to spend money on a rod and reel what would you do?

A better new rod (JM vs say shimano Backbone) and a second hand reel?

Or a second hand rod and a better reel? (new saragosa)

What do you recon?

Cheers

JD

Haven't really looked seriously . . . was tempted by the shimano JDM rod and saragossa for $1k at Top Catch. But would rather go as cheap as possible for reasonable gear.

I have the Shimano BBE and Saragosa. This is what I went through http://www.fishing.net.nz/asp_forums/1000-set-up-for-stickies_topic103991.html That may help.

Would be snaffling that second hand set up pronto at that price. second hand stella will out perform a new saragosa any day of the week.

Catch some big kingies first then you will realise you want half decent tackle i have spent my money on the reels as this is the business end. have had a stella 20000 for a year now which i use for sticking and jigging as i am a lefty so a universal reel for me which is top quality. Brought a t curve jigging rod and stick bait rod which are at the cheaper end of these kinds of rods and they work just fine, caught some nice fish on them so far.
