Get a decent 70l tramping bag and strap your rods to it.  I have never seen a custom lbg bag come close to being as comfortable when fully loaded.  Many of the guys in the club swear by Macpac but they are quite pricey.

Yep. Seen plenty of decent packs like that on trademe etc but better to go quality second hand rather than cheap and new as some of the crap on offer just won't last

I agree with the above posters. A back pack that can fit a heavy duty bucket in is coolness. Most of your tackle goes on pockets. Smelly stuff, and collapsible burley holder in the bucket. I use a seperate rod bag so I can walk narrow tracks a bit easier. Clean dry Sacks are a mans best friend for bringing your catch home.

Try and keep away from those old school packs with the external metal frames, as the frames have a habit or catching on rocks resulting in some unexpected face plants.

I have used an Osprey Aether 70ltr for the last 7yrs. Cheap when you do the sums as you get comfort and heaps of room and the weight of burley and bait is transferred to all the right locations. Before that i used a ryoshi fishing pack i think it was called Thumbs Down clips broke, canvas ripped and that little cold compartment at the bottom leaked from the first outing.

Link for new i think: http://www.ospreypacks.com/en/product/mens/aether_70_1_1

or keep your eyes out for 2nd hand because they last.

Appreciate today, it's an opportunity to do well from what we learnt yesterday

all of the brands mentioned are good value, you dont need to spend the earth these days to get a good backpack, you just need to time it for a sale, you have missed boxing day and anniversary sales but there are plenty more sales coming up. Just keep an eye on the usual sites, macpac, biouvac, even catmandoo.

there is a movement in hiking bags of some going back toward simplicity, you will see in store all the zippy bags then you will see bags that are basically just a big basic sack bag. thats my preference. less clips, cables, elastic to break. some made of waterproof non canvas like materials. the bag pico posted looks ideal imo.

one thing is, bags these days dont fit everyone, they are like jeans, you gotta try them on. especially vented bags (the ones that keep the bag off your back).

keep an eye on TM for quality used bags at bargain prices. people take up hiking and realise its not for them or they simply got the wrong backpack.
