Hi I caught this fish the other day and cannot figure out what species it is. Caught in Kaikoura right on the shore and its small (approx 25cm). It isnt any of the fish listed on the Kaikoura Marine Management brochure.
Its greenish yellow, has a large black spot on its side. You cant really see in the photo but the area around the fins were reddish.
Any help would be appreciated!

Not being pedantic Smudge but it actually has several maori names, let me consult the old book.Thumbs Up

Yes its a wrasse, and I fried up a portion of its little fillet (bit cautious before I knew what species it was) and it was actually pretty good!

Spotty are excellent eating, especially the bigger ones. They seem to be alot bigger in the Sounds and Kaikoura than they are in Auckland. Remember getting them big enough in the Pelorous sound to skin and bone into good fillets.

We caught some huge ones down Fiordland.

Where I come from - Whangaruru Harbour -  they are known as Pakiri by the local maori and they love them always saying how sweet they are, whole de-headed and pan fried or bbq'd, sometimes a few wrapped in tin foil and put in a hangi and those were great.

Caught many in my rocking fishing in the harbour days as a kid...all handlines and pipi baits.

My 1967 book says other names are kelpie, guffy, butterfish, paketi and pakirikiri.
