Hi people, coming down from Auckland next weekend to try a spot of trout jigging for a couple of days, just wondering which lake would be best to try, and which flies to use this time of year?
We're thinking of staying at lake lodge okataina.

Okataina probably one of the best to try I would of thought. Has been one of the "big fish" lakes.
Not an expert on the Rotorua lakes jigging but would think darker coloured smelt flies such as ginger micks , green orbits with a koura fly on bottom hook for the big fish!
LAke Rotoiti very good and also Lake Tarawera.

Have a look at TVNZ On Demand for Graeme Sinclair's (Gone Fishin') Opening Day episode, where he was jigging on Okataina (think it was aired 8 or 9 Nov). Plenty of advice there on flies etc. I'll be heading there for a jig at the soonest opportunity, even though I've never had much luck in that regard previously. But that doesn't matter so much when in such a cracking place as Okataina.

Also, Nick, who runs the Lakes Lodge Okataina, is a trouto as well, and has offered me some good advice over the bar in the past, and if memory serves had a selectrion of flies for sale that were (apparently) firing at the time.

Best of luck.

Was down at Lake Rotoiti Friday - Sunday.

Friday evening went out for an hour and landed one lost 2. Sat morning went out for a couple of hours - landed 6 within an hour, then didn't get a touch after that.

Nothing much for the rest of the weekend.

The only 2 flies they wanted Sat morning were Parsons Glory and Green Orbit, 3 fish on each.

All really nice fish mostly between 3.5 - 4.5lb, with a larger 6lber in the mix. Really good knick and hard fighting.

RC - you tried the new Black Magic silicon smelt paddle tails? Seem to be going off down Taupo - check greigsportsfishing reports.

Bought a couple of them the other day but haven't given them a nudge yet! Haven't had a huge amount of luck on traditional silicon smelts, but the black magic ones caught my eye...

Same here - not normally good results for me with silicone ones but they are doing the job in Taupo right now. Selling quite well here at Fish city - maybe a slightly quicker lift is the secret to get the paddle tails working??
About 6 colours to choose from - bit confusing really.

From off of O'keefes Anglers Depot facebook page:

FISHING REPORT November 2014
Strong winds over the last few weeks haven’t helped with the fishing. The fishing on Lake Rotorua has been ok when you can get out, the 5 metre mark past the airport down towards the marae has gone well and some good reports around Kawaha Point, the brown trout, red/white and purple tassie are working. Lake Rotoiti has been patchy with best results being early morning harling with bright colours over weed beds or in the shallows, Gisborne Point is a good option, as the day goes on, go deeper around 15 metre mark. Try traffic light, white/yellow or red/black lures. The jigging is improving and good condition fish are showing up, Gisborne point and Hauparu Bay are worth a look using grey ghost, ginger mick and green orbit flies, this same tactic is also working on Okataina with some lures, but go darker with jigging flies like green orbit, rabbit, light bully or olive woolly bugger. Lake Tarawera has been ok but the fish are small and in good condition, jigging has been a little slow but still worth it, harling under the mountain and Rangiuru Bay is good first thing in the morning. The fly fishing off the jetty at homestead on Lake Rerewhakaaitu has been consistent and also the DOC camp out the northern end is worth a look, green pattern flies are the best, or drift nymphs under an indicator. The streams running into Lake Rotorua have seen some fish running up them. The bridge pool at the Ngongotaha is the best first thing in the morning, fish muppet glo bug with hare and copper, red copper john or flash back pheasant tail.
If a man goes nowhere and theres no one there to see him, did he ever leave?

Munter - Outrageous Fortune.

Some exceptional reports from Lake Taupo with fish up to 8lb  caught jigging with some in superb condition.
Not the same fish it would seem that ran the rivers this year!

Must report a fail on my part - tried yesterday out around Tokaanu, stump bay and briefly over at Poukawa but wind sort of ruined it all after a couple of hours. Not alot of fish sign on sounder - smelt or trout so maybe fishfinder crook. Worked 40-50 m depths for only one hit. When I was launching there I spoke to one of the locals who was coming back from Pukawa - he had a real nice rainbow - 7-8lb.
My trolling reel fell to pieces so my options were limited!!
This morning perfect conditions saw me next to Motuapa headland at 6am. A few locals in a small boat were cleaning up next to me jigging - they got some nice fish too.
I caught one but only average size so let him go. (Ginger mick red body)
Went out between tauranga taupo and Motuapa on a nice drop off - no sign and no fish there either.
Had to get back home (and to attend to work issues) left 10am.
I thought i knew a thing or two about jigging - esp Taupo - but missed out bigtime this short trip.

Another fail here too.  Fished Taupo Sat 24/1/15 Waitahanui mouth about 12:15 to 2:15pm for nix.  Mate nix too.  We fished streamer smelt flies at the top (ginger mick, gray ghost) and globugs as a dropper.  A guy next to us hooked a nice fish but lost it about 2 minutes into the fight.  He was fishing a white booby fly at the top and "anything green" as the dropper.  There were up to 5 anglers at the time, and no good fish landed, so it was slow.

Sunday 25/1/15 harling around 5 Mile Bay and south of Waitahanui.  5 Mile Bay was dead but the 8 metre mark south of Waitahanui yielded a few fish.  I released 2 slabs, the first with a large growth in its stomach, not a pretty sight.  The second was in better condition but was mottled brown & yellow on the belly so back it went.  My mate then picked up a small fish in average condition and a nice silver colour so we kept it.  Later turned out to have very dull coloured flesh and almost no flavour, but we gratefully ate it anyway.

We tried a bit of jigging about 9am from 25m down to 45m off Waitahanui.  No sign on the sounder, no smelt no trout, so no surprises there.   Then joined a gaggle of jiggers off Wharewaka Point (2 yaks, rubber ducky and 2 other boats), about 35m, and dangled our Uncles jig sets to no avail.  Again no sign at all, but one of the other boats landed one while we were there.  The ranger was doing his rounds, weighing and measuring every fish, and to avoid the tedium of having our single sprat pawed over, we flagged it.  Besides, I had one of them thar new-fangled online licenses (spits loudly in the dust).  I would have had to show the ranger my phone with a confirmation email saying I'd purchased a 1-week license, but I didn't have access to a printer, so wasn't able to print a copy.  Not sure how they handle that.  Didn't stick around to find out.

Great weather, great company, sampled a bit of trout, tried 3 methods of fishing - poific!
Far Quirk - I'm goin' fishn!
