Hunting mates at top of SI are getting hassled by plague of rats; they've never seen so many before, ever.

Cool, thanks Nick. Lets see some pics of 10-12lb hogs with bulging belly's like last time, the so called mouse eaters I have seen thus far seem quite small and nothing out of the ordinary, looking forward to seeing how this progresses as the season goes on, certainly seems no 'plague of Mice' however, depends who you talk to it seems, but Peter's comments are encouraging Clark.

I have noticed quite an increase of rats around the house and garden / cat bringing them in, but we have no Beech here, so possibly unrelated. More Cicada's going for it this morning. Can't wait!!!

Peter was fairly adamant you would call it a plague, but only in localised areas. And the HOGS will take a month or two to develop... let's not give up hope.

Any tips for preventing the tent getting besieged by them? My worst nightmare is to come back to camp and find my food sacked. That would kind of ruin a trip!

Guess you could suspend it from a tree, like they do with bears, although the mice would probably abseil the rope! Confused

I remember the last plague being in a hut in the Tararua's, the rats we're scurrying all over the rafters, in our packs, even trying to get in sleeping bags. The mice we're mostly outside not inside, we'd bait them up to the window and drop a rock on 'em from above then wander down to the pool and throw the dead ones in, the fish would not touch them dead drifted, but I do remember one geting nailed at the tail of the pool. They def like 'em wriggling!

Put the food in a sack and hang it from a tree.    However, to make it rat/mice proof make a knot in the rope and thread a disk with a centre hole onto the rope so that it rests on the knot halfway down the rope.    Any rat coming down the rope will slide off on the disk.    We used to use milk powder tin lids and hung all our perishables from the ridge poles of our cullers tent camps.

Man, it reminds me of that movie Willard lol, hopefully there's not too many "Ben" mice about. Socrates was alright though. I guess that's good news aye, hence they won't be eating many poisoned mice if they do like 'em wriggling. Thumbs Up

Cheers Herb, sounds like a fair bit of work, but less so than hiking back to civilisation to resupply. Makes me wonder how far they will go, wonder if they'd eat through my tent to get the food. Pinch Censored

The Lodge owner in question posted these two photos on Facebook tonight... First is 8.5 and the second 10.25 Looking at the arse on the first one I would think there is little doubt what it has been eating and the second one fits the bill too without the hemorrhoids. Big smile

That second one is a cracker fish, got an email from Mike Kirkpatrick tonight and he's not seeing any such mouse action around Nelson and probably does more hours on the water than anyone - quite  localised still it seems but promising signs!! He mentioned the mild winter is helping with the great condition of fish at present.

Reports of mice now rampaging through Nelson, and Arthurs Pass. Not sure how reliable they are though as they were from a "birder".

They're in the wrong place, no good rivers around there, at least what I'm aware of.

Haven't DOC dropped a load of 1080 around there, shouldn't that have reduced the populations. At least they were claiming to have reduced the populations in the Maruia region by something like 80% on "3rd Degree" the other night. You have to wonder if they plant those ink papers to get the right result for the camera.
