You sure can, stayed overnight on a few over the years. Shag, goat, little rabbit, bush, christmas, north king all have caves or sheltered overhangs.

If you're only going for the day, then make sure you get the tides right. I fish Happy Jacks quite often and when the tide is low or slack, there's not too much happening there. IN MY PERSONAL EXPERIENCE anyway. Like other things obviously it varies, however I have had MUCH more luck with an incoming/outgoing tide.

Kia Ora.

Heading up to Anglers for five days fishing before Christmas with my four children.

We will be doing the Island Water Taxi service and charter boat service.

My kids are at an age ( youngest is eleven ) where they are all strong swimmers and have some sense around the sea.

I'm looking for advice in terms of safety.

We will have Life Jackets and I'm getting a hand held Marine Radio.

We will also take a trow ring and throw rope.

I will also get us dropped off in the lee of the prevailing swells.

I was thinking arriving at high tide to the spot, watching the fishing spot for half an hour before setting up.

Any tips apart from that much appreciated.

I guess this trip we will just go to the safest platform(s) first and Berley up heavily.....the actual fishing will be a secondary consideration to the safety aspects

Cheers.

It is really safe as they don't do drop offs if it is to rough. I have been over 30 times and never had conditions so bad that you would get into trouble if you fell in the water. Its and awesome day and the kids will love it!!!

This is "North King" Just out from Papa Aroha at high tide. We have got a lot of nice fish off here. A few snaps around the 15lb mark.

I like the other corner better tho and would be great for the kids. Nice little ledge with no snags at all but still has kelp with out being a pain

Cheers for that OnTheRocks.

That looks amazing. Very reassuring. We will be set !

How long are the bigger Rods you are using ?

We have 15kg rods, a set of 7'6" boat rods for each fisherman ( I was going to take those and one Daiwa Monster rod with a Sargossa 2500 for bigger stuff ) the other reels are the baitrunner 1200b series.

We have Surfcasters but they're all 13 - 14 footers like the Okuma Predator rods......

Not sure which to take off the rocks.

Thanks again OnTheRocks. lots of useful tips, much apreciated.

Really looking forward to this trip now (was before) but the feedback from people who know what it's all about really sets up the anticipation and now it is all about the fishing / having fun.

Rough plan is to Burley up a storm without over feeding and strayline baits into the trail....put out a couple of Liveys.....and throw some poppers.

Should be interesting if the weather comes to play. Big Kahawai are game fish to the kids and anything over and above that is a bonus.

I Picked up one of the entry level Popper Rods....the new BBE ELite top water Rod......

Thereafter it is in the lap of the fishing Gods.

Know that area real well. Can remember prior to the KY trawlers in 70s ripping between the islands.

A really spiritually awesome place to be.

Have you figured which island? The surrounding terrain can be quite different. Anywhere there and up produces a feed. magic.

Real keen on the tips and advice OntheRocks shared, very keen to go the North King right off the bat.
Thereafter whatever the Anglers Lodge folk are recommending for that time of year.

Also keen to go back in the April onwards try that season as well.

Originally we had planned to go to the far North and fish Pukenui and Maunganui warves( been there) Anglers Lodge offered a whole new avenue ( we love our readily access LBG options ).

Did anyone get out to the islands over Xmas/NY? Booked in with the water taxi for a couple of days this weekend so interested if there is any up to date info on how the fishing is going.

Cheers

pretty much all the tips cover the topic. i use to fish there a lot in 70s so my advice on the islands will be worthless, damn good spot back then. use to watch big snapper coming right to the surface to feed off the shellfish. scallies and cray dive and then we would catch our needs of snaps and kings. oh i remember power head spearguns. although they have come back now i believe. didnt they get banned for a while?

you could do far worse for a sunset too at times, when there is a bit of cloud it get really red over the islands.

if you are landbased, plenty of spots fairly local to there too without the need to taxi.

one of the locals wrote an article about snaps and kings for the coro islands at winter, same rules apply to  autumn i imagine. ill try to find the article.

i fished some mainland spots around the amodeo area last autumn before heading to europe, managed to catch my fill of snaps, but didnt have livie rod as we just wanted to chillax, have a beer, catch a feed and watch the sunset.
